Ten days ago, outspoken (former) Bruin punter Chris Kluwe was released by the Minnesota Vikings, replaced by fellow Bruin Jeff Locke after 8 years in Minneapolis. Today, it looks like Chris has already found a new home.
Throughout their history, the Oakland Raiders have seen their share of colorful personalities. And in 2013, they're adding another, signing punter Chris Kluwe on Wednesday. The signing will be formally announced on Thursday.
Before reading on further, click through that last hyperlink and look at the byline. Yes, that is Brendon Ayanbadejo breaking news of the signing for Fox Sports. I don't know if he has definitely committed to hanging up the cleats and pads, but his past and ongoing activism does look to help in his transition to a post-football life.
"I'm excited to be an Oakland Raider and be playing in California," Kluwe, who attended high school in Southern California before going to UCLA, told me on Wednesday. "Now, my family can actually come to games."
... Kluwe is known for his mind and mouth, as well as his leg. He is a vocal advocate of equality in sports (and life), and says he will continue to speak for what he believes.
"I'm still going to be myself socially and continue to tweet and interact with my fans," Kluwe said
Whatever I might think of the Raiders, it is great to hear that Kluwe has caught on with another team quickly. It is also good to see that Brendon is getting a nice start to his second career.
Welcome to Oakland, Chris!
