Coach Mora got it right: the Bruins own Los Angeles, and it was no different this afternoon, with our #8-ranked Bruins picking up a 5-2 win at Southern Cal's Dedeaux Field to sweep the Trojans, for UCLA's eighth straight win. Not only did UCLA pick up a much-needed win as the Bruins chase down the Oregon schools in the conference standings as we get closer to the end of the regular season (with next weekend's series at Stanford marking the end of the regular season), but it also was Coach John Savage's 400th career victory.
Grant Watson (5.0 IP, 1 ER, 0 K) got the start for the Bruins and fell behind early, surrendering a run in the bottom of the first to give Southern Cal an early lead. Fortunately for the sophomore, the Bruins were able to generate just enough offense off of Trojan starter Kyle Twomey, to give Watson his sixth victory on the year. Watson will have to thank the left side of his infield, with 3B Kevin Kramer (3-5, 2 R, 2 RBI) and SS Pat Valaika (2-4, 2 RBI) leading UCLA offensively. On the back-end, Cody Poteet (1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 K), James Kaprielian (1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 K), Zack Weiss (0.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 K) all contributed to keeping the Trojans at the 2 runs picked up against Watson, with David Berg (1.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 K) coming in to close it out to pick up his 16th save of the year.
With the series sweep in the books, the Bruins continue to show how they have dominated Southern Cal and make Coach Mora's #WOTT ring true. With Southern Cal swept out of the way, UCLA now sits at 37-15 overall and 20-7 in Pac-12 play, tied with the Oregon Ducks for second place in the conference, and hot on the heels of Oregon State (22-5 in conference play, with Washington State in Corvallis next weekend). So, remember, next weekend we're Bruins fans and Cougars fans.
