Headlines in the Bruin Twitterverse: Congratulations Brett Hundley!

Bruins and others congratulate Brett Hundley - twitter style - on his impressive NFL debut and on his first NFL touchdown pass!

Tonight Brett Hundley made his NFL debut against the New England Patriots. Brett entered the game towards the end of the third quarter and was the third quarterback to lead the Packers. When he entered the Packers were beating the Patriots 15-11.  When he exited the game, the Packers were up 22-11.

At first, it looked like Brett was going to experience something very familiar. Here's the play-by-play of the first series:

  • 6:36) GB 7-Hundley now at QB.
  • 1-10-GB 46-A.Harris right guard to NE 42 for 10 yards (49D-J.Morris). PENALTY on GB-65-L.Taylor, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at 50.
  • 1-18-GB 40(6:11) 46-A.Harris up the middle to GB 43 for 3 yards (49D-J.Morris).
  • 2-15-GB 43(5:27) (Shotgun) 7-B.Hundley sacked at GB 33 for -10 yards (70D-R.Johnson).
  • 3-25-GB 33(4:48) (Shotgun) 7-B.Hundley pass short middle to 88-T.Montgomery to GB 48 for 15 yards (22-R.McClain; 37-J.Richards).
  • 4-10-GB 48(4:17) (Punt formation) PENALTY on NE, Defensive 12 On-field, 5 yards, enforced at GB 48 - No Play.
Look familiar. Nice run for a first down, brought back by a holding penalty. Up the middle. Sack (by the way, this was a bad attempted block on the end - Hundley didn't hold on to the ball too long - no chance. Nice pass up the middle, but no way enough to make up the extra 15 yards handed to him (3rd and 25). Yes, going backwards is something Brett has had to deal with on an all too regular basis. But fortunately, that was not his only series.

In the second series, Brett made some really beautiful passes. However, they were just a little too tough for the receivers to bring down in bounds (two feet you know). Here's the series:

  • 1-10-GB 7-B.Hundley pass incomplete short right to 88-T.Montgomery.
  • 2-10-GB 13(:31) 38-J.Crockett left guard to GB 13 for no gain (45-C.Gordon).
  • 3-10-GB 13(Shotgun) 7-B.Hundley pass incomplete deep right to 88-T.Montgomery.
Both passes to Montgomery were really nice, but he couldn't get both feet down. In the first case, Brett was almost sacked, but got out of it, scrambled to the right and threw a nice pass down the sideline, but just out of bounds. On third down, the pass was beautiful, Montgomery stretched out to make a beautiful catch, got one foot dow but was knocked out of bounds before he could get the other down.

And then the third series:
  • 1-10-GB 30-J.Kuhn up the middle to GB 35 for -4 yards (27-T.Wilson; 35D-J.Jean).
  • 2-14-GB 35(11:48) (Shotgun) 7-B.Hundley pass short right to 86-K.Backman to GB 39 for 4 yards (25D-D.Swanson; 45-C.Gordon).
  • 3-10-GB 39(11:06) (Shotgun) 7-B.Hundley pass deep left to 11-L.Pinkard pushed ob at NE 30 for 31 yards (37-J.Richards).
  • 1-10-NE 30(10:31) 38-J.Crockett right end to NE 28 for 2 yards (25D-D.Swanson).
  • 2-8-NE 28(9:57) 38-J.Crockett left tackle to NE 26 for 2 yards (45-C.Gordon; 48-G.Grissom).
  • 3-6-NE 26(9:12) (Shotgun) 7-B.Hundley pass incomplete deep left to 11-L.Pinkard. NE-70D-R.Johnson was injured during the play. PENALTY on NE-45-C.Gordon, Roughing the Passer, 13 yards, enforced at NE 26 - No Play.
  • 1-10-NE 13(9:07) (Shotgun) 38-J.Crockett right guard to NE 13 for no gain (90-Z.Moore; 41-D.Watson).
  • 2-10-NE 13(8:32) 38-J.Crockett up the middle to NE 10 for 3 yards (46D-L.Fort; 42-X.Dickson).
  • 3-7-NE 10(7:49) (Shotgun) 7-B.Hundley pass short right to 38-J.Crockett for 10 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Brett looked calm, collected, together, and in command.  From Acme Packing Co.:

Brett Hundley taking the third set of quarterback snaps ahead of Matt Blanchardwas an interesting choice, but it's a sign both that he has indeed been improving lately and that Blanchard still doesn't really have a serious shot at making the team. He seemed to play very well too, making some nice throws into tight windows and later adding a touchdown pass to John Crockett. All told, he seemed confident and effective, a very good sign after struggling during his first week of training camp.
