At halftime, the Bruins are leading Virginia 17-9

You can see the first half game stats here.

UVA took the opening kickoff and converted a couple first downs to get into FG range for a 3-0 lead.

The much anticipated debut of Josh Rosen followed and it looked like we were gonna have a Brett Hundley-esque huge play right out of the gate as he hit Kenny Walker perfectly in stride on a deep ball for a certain touchdown. The three and out was a big buzzkill to start the season. But it didn't last long.

After UVA went backward on it's second drive, Rosen took to the air and led the Bruins on a 44 yard TD drive that featured a perfectly executed 30 yd screen to Paul Perkins and a sweet 16 yard deep out to Thomas Duarte and capped by an easy 4 yd TD pass to Devin Fuller. 7-3 Bruins.

The Bruins played a clean first quarter with just one penalty on a punt return. But the flags came out in the second quarter. A holding penalty killed the Bruins next drive, and a weak horsecollar tackle by Myles Jack and a PI on Fabian Moreau augmented Virginia's subsequent drive which netted a short FG to make it 7-6 UCLA.

Paul Perkins started eating up some yards on the next drive and Rosen laid a pass on Duarte's outstretched/diving/rolling fingertips for a gorgeous 30 yard TD.

Virginia's next drive was extended by another horsecollar tackle (which was really a face mask) by Jack but the defense again held in the red zone to force UVA to kick its 3rd FG of the half. 14-9 Bruins.

The offense got the ball back with just over a minute and marched down in to the red zone but couldn't get teh TD. Ka'imi Fairbairn knocked home the 26 yard kick. 17-9 Bruins.

One half in and the Bruins are looking mostly pretty good. Rosen looks fantastic so far. The run game showed some signs and the line surrendered just one sack. The defense was stout against the run but was pretty soft in both pass rush and coverage, and hurt itself more with a few penalties. We'd like to see a lot less bend out of the Bruins defense in the second half, and get that ball in Rosen's and Perkins' hands.
