There's an old saying that a bad day at golf is better than a good day at work. The UCLA Women's Golf team might disagree because, while yesterday may not have been a "good day at golf", it was good enough to keep the Bruins in third place overall at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
Yesterday, the team shot a 3 over 291 which puts them at a 1 over 577 after the second round and, while they obviously want to play well, they simply need to finish stroke play in the top eight to advance to the eight-team match play portion of the tournament.
Senior Louise Ridderström shot a second round 1 over 73 putting her in a tie for tenth place overall and she is still the Bruins' top golfer. Junior Bronte Law finished the day is now only one stroke behind Ridderström after shooting a par 72 on Saturday. Law is tied for 19th place.
Freshman Lilia Vu also shot a par 72 on Saturday and is tied for 33rd, having shot a 1 over 145 through the first two rounds. The Bruins' other freshman Bethany Wu is now tied for 54th after shooting a 2 over 74 on Saturday. Wu is at 3 over 147 after two rounds. Junior Hadas Libman posted a non-team scoring 4 over 76 on Saturday bring her score to a 10 over 154 which ties her for 114th.
This year marks the second in a row under the new format, which features four rounds of stroke play and three rounds of match play to determine the national champion. The 24-team field will face 18 holes of stroke play yesterday, today and tomorrow before the field is trimmed to 15. Then on Monday, the top eight teams from those 15 will advance to the match-play portion. Play on Tuesday will feature the match-play quarterfinals in the morning and the semifinals in the afternoon, with the last two teams standing squaring off for the NCAA Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
Round three starts for the Bruins this morning at 8:36 a.m. The Bruins will start off the first tee in the order of Libman, Wu, Vu, Law and Ridderström. UCLA will tee off with Southern Cal and Washington. You can follow along with live scoring of the tournament for the third round.
Go Bruins!!!
