35 UCLA Athletes and Coaches Are Headed To Rio

In a little under two weeks, the world will descend upon Rio for this year’s Olympic Games and, while there may be reports of problems with plumbing and electrical wiring in the Olympic Village, a total of 35 individuals with UCLA affiliations continue to prepare for the Games.

Of the thirty athletes affiliated with UCLA, three are current students and four are incoming freshmen while nine more have graduated since the London Games four years ago. Courtney Mathewson, a water polo player who graduated in 2008, is the only previous gold medalist.

In all, eleven countries will have Bruins representing them, but only the US with 19 and Canada with 2 will have more than one Bruin on their team.

Additionally, four coaches and one other team members have UCLA ties. They are US Women's Soccer coach Jill Ellis who coached the UCLA Women's Soccer team, US Women's Volleyball Coach Karch Kiraly, US Women's Water Polo Coach Adam Krikorian, US Men's Volleyball Coach John Speraw and former UCLA assistant coach Andrea Becker who is a sports psychologist for the US Men's Volleyball team.
