The First Round is in the books. All four Pac-12 teams advanced to the Second Round yesterday. In addition to UCLA beating Kent State, Oregon topped Iona and Southern Cal squeaked by SMU.
Besides Southern Cal’s upset, there were a few others yesterday. The biggest surprise was probably Michigan State beating Miami by 20 points, 78-58. Rhode Island, an 11 seed, upset 6 seed Creighton; meanwhile, Wichita State defeated Dayton. That game, while technically an upset, really wasn’t as the seeding in that game should probably have been reversed on Selection Sunday.
The Second Round begins today with eight games on tap. You could almost call today “Four-Seed Saturday” since all of the four-seeds play today. West Virginia will start things off this morning against Notre Dame while the Midwest four-seed Purdue will wrap up the action tonight when they play the five-seed Iowa St. Cyclones.
In between, we’ll get top-seeds Villanova and Gonzaga in games against Wisconsin and Northwestern, respectively. And, of course, Arizona will play St. Mary’s later on this afternoon.
