2017 NCAA Tournament: Gonzaga vs. Xavier and Oregon vs Kansas For Final Four Berths

With only eight teams remaining in the tournament, four will face off today with Oregon as the only remaining Pac-12 team.

There were a few surprises on day two of the Sweet 16, including our own Bruins once again being unable to advance past the third round of the tournament. Both North and South Carolina advanced with ease, one with several elite eight appearances in the recent past, and the other advancing for the first time in school history. Wisconsin and Florida took it into overtime, with Chris Chiozza of Florida hitting probably one of the best buzzer beaters of the tournament to bring home the victory for the Gators.

Today’s games feature a couple of teams that effectively busted many people’s brackets. Game one is the West Regional Final which will pit number one seed Gonzaga against eleven seed Xavier. This is the only game with a double-digit seed remaining. Three eleven seeds have made it to the Final Four in tournament history: LSU (1986), George Mason (2006), and VCU (2011). Can the gutty Musketeers hang on to make it four? Neither Gonzaga or Xavier have ever been to a Final Four, so no matter who goes, someone will be making school history. Gonzaga is extremely efficient both offensively and defensively, so Chris Mack and Company are going to have their work cut out for them.

The day’s second game is one-seed Kansas versus three-seed Oregon. Kansas has Frank Mason who has scored 20+ points in six straight games, and Josh Jackson has helped bring the Jayhawks eleven wins in a row. To top it all off, Kansas beat Purdue by 32 points and tonight’s game is basically going to be a home game. Oregon has struggled to beat their opponents by even single digits, so the Ducks are really going to have to turn it up to have a chance tonight.
