Today’s early games start off with a dandy when the #12 Michigan State Spartans travel to the Horseshoe to face the #13 Ohio State Buckeyes. While both of these teams have been eliminated from consideration for the College Football Playoff, anytime you pair up schools this good, anything can happen and, today, probably won’t be an exception.
But, Bruin fans may just want to keep an eye on the other early matchup between Top 25 teams when #15 Oklahoma State visits #21 Iowa State in a Big 12 game. Why would this one be of interest to Bruin fans? Two words: Matt Campbell. He’s done a fantastic job leading the Cyclones and he should be on Dan Guerrero’s short list to replace Jim Mora once the season wraps up. Chip Kelly will still be the big draw even though he shouldn’t be but Campbell has earned the right to interview for the job and I can think of a lot of choices that would be worse than Campbell. He’s a young up-and-coming coach. Give this game a look today.
There are two 12:30 kickoffs that should prove to be interesting. In the first one, the #1 Georgia Bulldogs visit the #10 Auburn Tigers in the SEC. Can the Tigers knock off #1? In the other game, the #8 Wisconsin Badgers finally play a worthy opponent when the #20 Iowa Hawkeyes visit Madison. Wisconsin is still undefeated, but they are only ranked eighth by the Playoff Committee due to their schedule. This is really their first big test. A blowout win is needed to put them back in the Playoff conversation.
Finally, there are two early Pac-12 games. #11 Southern Cal travels to Boulder to play the Colorado Buffaloes at 1 pm PT on FOX. Can the Buffaloes use the thin mountain air to knock off the Trojans? I don’t know, but I do know that the Buffs are my second favorite team today.
Then, at 2:30 pm PT, the #19 Washington State Cougars travel to Salt Lake City to face the Utah Utes. A similar question arises for the Utes. Can they use the thinner mountain air to help knock off the Cougs?
