College Football Saturday: #5 Wisconsin Hosts #24 Michigan in a Big Ten Matchup

Meanwhile, Virginia takes on Miami in the ACC.

NCAA Football: Wisconsin at Michigan Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

While there is plenty of college football action all day today, there just aren’t that many “must-see” games to hold you over until UCLA plays Southern Cal at 5 pm PT.

This morning, there are really just two games with the potential to be very good.

The first one kicks off on ABC at 9 am PT between the Virginia Cavaliers and the #3 Miami Hurricanes. Sure, given how the Canes have played all season long, the outcome of this game really should not be in doubt for very long. But, Bronco Mendenhall is in the process of turning the Cavalier program around. In fact, he already has the team bowl-eligible this season at 6-4. The Canes, meanwhile, have three games left: today’s game against Virginia, next week’s game against Pitt, and the following week against Clemson. It’s possible the Canes could get could looking past the Cavaliers towards the Clemson game today. Don’t underestimate a Bronco Mendenhall team.

The other 9 am game worth checking out has the #24 Michigan Wolverines travelling to Madison, Wisconsin to face the #5 Wisconsin Badgers and will air on Fox. The Badgers are still undefeated and they are one of just three Power 5 schools still unbeaten. The other two are Miami and Alabama. The Badgers, though, have gotten very little respect this year. That’s because their non-conference schedule was pretty weak, although still stronger than Bama’s. They faced three Group of 5 schools in Utah State, Florida Atlantic and a down BYU. Beyond that, all they’ve done is roll through the Big Ten with ease. Unfortunately, their toughest game was a 9-point win over Northwestern. Today’s game could be tougher as they face Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines even though they just don’t seem to be quite as good this season. So, this will likely be another easy win for the Badgers. Will it impress the College Football Playoff committee enough to give the Badgers a spot in the top four? Probably not until after the Big Ten Championship Game against either Ohio State or Penn State.

In early afternoon action, you may want to check out the game between the Kentucky Wildcats and the #7 Georgia Bulldogs. While the Bulldogs should win this game, Kentucky is one of just three schools in the SEC East who are bowl-eligible this year. In fact, the perennial doormat is 7-3 going into this game. But Georgia needs to win today to keep its hopes of getting back into the College Football Playoff picture alive as they head into the SEC Championship Game in a few weeks.
