Another day, another set of bowl games. There are four games on the slate for today.
The first game is probably the bowl game which has been the subject of more jokes than any other bowl game due to its past corporate sponsors and its latest sponsor could provide even more jokes. It’s the Independence Bowl, fka the Poulan/Weed-Eater Independence Bowl. Now, it’s known as the Walk On’s Independence Bowl, which, of course, begs the question of whether the Florida State Seminoles and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles will be required to start their walk-on players.
Florida State, of course, is a team in transition. Head coach Jimbo Fisher has left for Texas A&M and Odell Haggins will serve as interim head coach for today’s game. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles are led by second-year coach Jay Hopson.
The matchup gets better in today’s second game when the Boston College Eagles face the Iowa Hawkeyes in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. The Pinstripe Bowl has the distinction of being one of only a few games played in a cold weather climate and that could play a factor in today’s game as the game time temperature should be in the mid-to-low 20s, but, of course, both of these teams might be used to cold weather. So, it might not be as big a deal as it could be.
The third game today features a Pac-12-Big Ten matchup. It’s the Foster Farms Bowl between the Arizona Wildcats and the Purdue Boilermakers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. Khalil Tate led the Wildcats to a better-than-expected third place finish in the Pac-12 South. Meanwhile, the Boilermakers are bowl-eligible under new head coach Jeff Brohm after finishing 3-9 last season. The big question in this game is: “Will Purdue be able to contain Khalil Tate?” If they can, expect a Purdue win. If they can’t, the Wildcats will probably win this game.
The final game today is the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl from Houston. This game features the Texas Longhorns against the Missouri Tigers. The Longhorns finished a disappointing fourth in the Big 12 in the first season under head coach Tom Herman. The Tigers finished 3rd in the SEC East. Missouri could end up being the next stop for UCLA offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, who it was rumored interviewed for the opening created when Josh Heupel left to become the head coach at Central Florida. Whether or not that will happen, though, won’t be known for a few days.
Here’s today’s full slate of games:
