UCLA linebacker Kenny Young is one of 51 collegiate players from 43 colleges and universities were named to the Butkus Award collegiate watch list this morning.
The Butkus Award is named for legendary Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus, whom NFL Films considers the best defensive player in football history. 51 players were selected for the watchlist because that was Butkus’ number with the Bears and they were selected by a 51-person selection panel of deeply experienced coaches, talent evaluators and journalists.
Former Bruin linebacker Eric Kendricks won the award in 2014. The two winners before Kendircks came from Notre Dame and Alabama while the two winners after Kendricks also came from Notre Dame and Alabama. So, if the recent school pattern holds, this would be the year for a Bruin linebacker to win the award, but, of course, that doesn’t really mean much in the big scheme of things.
Semi-finalists will be named October 30, finalists November 20, and winners will be notified on or before December 5.
Congratulations, Kenny!
Go Bruins!!!
