Our first game today is the First Responder Bowl at 10:30 am PT, with the Boston College Eagles and the Boise State Broncos taking a crack at each other. This game, previously known as the Heart of Dallas Bowl, will take place at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, and Boise State has a slight edge in the odds by about a field goal.

Boise State’s edge could be fueled by BC’s season-closing skid. The Eagles have lost three in a row and AJ Dillon, the team’s leading rusher, left their last game with an injury. Dillon is questionable at this point and his 1,000+ yard season may or may not be capped with a bowl appearance.

Boise State, on the other hand, has skilled quarterback Brett Rypien at the helm, and their team averages 35+ points per game. Their top rusher, Alexander Mattison, has over 1,400 yards this season and will have a huge impact on the game as well.

Next on the docket is the Quick Lane Bowl, kicking off at 2:15 pm PT, featuring the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Georgia Tech has a big ground game and quarterback TaQuon Marshall has more yards and touchdowns on the ground as he does in the air while also leading the team in rushing. Additionally, backup Georgia Tech quarterback Tobias Oliver is the second leading rusher on the team, with 807 yards on the season. His talents have mostly been reserved for moving the ball with his feet, as he only has 13 passing attempts this year.

Minnesota had a crazy game early in the season, beating Fresno State 21-14 at the buzzer, but promptly hit the skids two weeks later with a four-game losing streak. They’ve relied heavily on their defense, which ranks 64th in the country, to keep them in games this year, but, when they lost, they were pretty big blowouts. They barely became bowl eligible in the eleventh hour, beating Wisconsin on November 24 in their final game of the regular season, 37-15. Can the Golden Gophers pull off another upset? The Yellow Jackets are favored by about a touchdown.

Finally, the Cheez-It Bowl will feature the UC Berkeley Golden Bears and the TCU Horned Frogs. The Bears started hot this year, winning their first three games, but then hit a three-game loss streak. They revived their season against Oregon State and, then, upset #15 Washington at home and beat Southern Cal two weeks later. They have a stout defense that comes in at 16th in the country and two solid quarterbacks in Chase Garbers and Brandon McIlwain. Ross Bowers, another capable option at quarterback, was coming in third all season and recently announced his desire to transfer.

TCU also brings a solid defense to the table, coming in at #26. Unfortunately, they’re going to have to go three down the depth chart with their quarterback since starter Shawn Robinson had season ending surgery after their seventh game of the season and #2 man Michael Collins is out with a foot injury. Senior Grayson Muehlstein will be taking the reins and, although a senior, he has only seen action in four games this season. He played in two at the beginning of the season and came in to relieve Collins after he injured his foot late in the season.
