Bowl Game Thursday: Duke and Baylor Look to End 2018 on a High Note

Additionally, Wisconsin chooses to burn a key redshirt in the final hour of the 2018 season.

Yesterday, actually saw the First Responder Bowl become the first bowl game to be cancel due to bad weather. While Boston College was up 7-0 at the time the game was suspended, all stats have been thrown out and it is as if the game had never started.

Today’s games begin at 10:30 am PT with the Duke Blue Devils taking on the Temple Owls in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. Temple relies heavily on their defense, which ranks 39th overall but 7th in passing defense. Unless Duke plans on putting Zion Williamson in at tight end, the Blue Devils are going to have a heck of a time with their air game. Coincidentally, Zion is about the same size as Duke’s tallest offensive lineman.

Duke is actually tied with Pac-12 teams UCLA and Colorado at 72nd in total offense, which will not stack up well against Temple. Their ranking is directly related to their final two games where they blown out by Clemson 35-6 and, more surprisingly, Wake Forest, 59-7.

At 2:15 pm PT, the Pinstripe Bowl will feature the Miami Hurricanes and the Wisconsin Badgers at Yankee Stadium. These teams have identical 7-5 records. The turnover chain is back and Miami’s 15th ranked scoring defense will surely give the Badgers a hard time.

Wisconsin is choosing to burn backup quarterback Jack Coan’s redshirt for their bowl appearance, as starting quarterback Alex Hornibrook has been dealing with concussion issues and just isn’t healthy enough to play. Coan has already played in four games this season. So, after playing in their bowl game, this year will officially count against his eligibility. According to SB Nation, this will make the depth chart more interesting in 2019 as Hornibrook will still have a year left and Wisconsin has a four-star recruit on his way to Madison.

Finally, the Baylor Bears and the Vanderbilt Commodores will kick off the Texas Bowl at 6:00 pm PT in Houston. Gone are the days of RGIII slinging the ball around, as the Bears barely became bowl eligible on November 24 by beating Texas Tech 35-24. However, this is a major improvement from their 1-11 2017 season.

Vanderbilt had a tough schedule this year, taking on top teams such as Notre Dame and Georgia, so the Commodores’ 6-6 record was well earned. Senior quarterback Kyle Shurmur has a whopping 2,844 passing yards and 23 touchdowns, which was nicely balanced by running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn’s 144 carries for 1,001 yards.
