Bowl Game Saturday: #7 Michigan Faces #10 Florida in the Peach Bowl

The Peach Bowl and the Belk Bowl get today’s action started off.

NCAA Football: Michigan at Ohio State Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

The bowl games continue today with the first of the New Year’s Six bowls when the #7 Michigan Wolverines face the #10 Florida Gators in the Peach Bowl this morning at 9 am PT. This game should be one of the best bowl games so far since it matches up a pair of top ten teams.

Jim Harbaugh’s team started the season by losing to a Notre Dame team that is playing later today in the College Football Playoff Semifinal. Their only other loss came against Big Ten Champion Ohio State.

Meanwhile, Florida appears to have come out ahead in the Chip Kelly sweepstakes, even though they lost. Dan Mullen led the Gators to a 9-3 mark in his first season, which was good for second place in the SEC East this year behind Georgia. Of course, it remains to be seen if they really did get the better deal last year when it came to replacing their head coach, but, for this season, they did.

Today’s other 9 am game features the Virginia Cavaliers and the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, NC. Bronco Mendenhall has continued to build his program with the Hoos after going 2-10 his first season and 6-7 last season. So far this year, Virginia is 7-5. So, Mendenhall appears to be making progress in Charlottesville.

On the other hand, Will Muschamp’s program at the “real” USC took a step backwards this year, going 7-5 this season after going 9-4 last year. But, the Gamecocks are a 4.5-point favorite in this one.

The final non-playoff game today is the Arizona Bowl. You’d expect that a bowl game played on the campus of the University of Arizona might have a Pac-12 school playing in it. You’d be wrong. This game features the Arkansas State Red Wolves against the Nevada Wolfpack. Jay Norvell, who was a terrible offensive coordinator for Karl Dorrell in 2007, has really managed to turn things around for the Wolfpack. In Norvell’s first season, Nevada was just 3-9 while this season, they improved to 7-5.

Their opponent is not the Razorbacks, but the Red Wolves. Arkansas State finished this season with an 8-4 record and tied for first in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division. While this game might be a good matchup for these teams, it really probably isn’t worth changing the channel from the Peach Bowl.
