Time For Bill Walton To Hang Up His Mic And Ear Phones

I know this post will be received with with a degree of scorn and probably deemed disloyal but I am compelled to express my view. I wonder if anyone else holds the same perspectives that I do.

Here we go.

I am tired of watching Bruin BB games where the great Bill Walton is part of the broadcast team.

There I said it!

I realize the man is a living legend for his days in a Bruin uniform as well as his time in the NBA but I find his broadcasting style simply disturbing.

His constant rambling quite frankly is huge distraction when trying to watch the game. His repetitive and predictable color commentary on the whole is chaotic at best and doesn’t bring much value or insight to the broadcast.

Rarely does he break down the X’s and O’s of the game in a short and concise informative manner. He continually strays away from explaining the game as it unfolds leaving the casual fan lost in his silly tirades. I personally don’t need the game explained to me but Walton no doubt is alienating those casual fans who might need a little guidance as to what is happening on the court or what a team is doing or needs to do.

As a seasoned Coach and former player I encourage quick and applicable insights from the broadcast team if nothing else to challenge my personal knowledge and hypothetical tactics of the game that I play out in my mind during the course of the game.

The whole approach by Bill is stale and often bizarre to be kind. I am forced to turn the volume down on my TV so I can focus on clock, score, and rhythm of the game. The irony is that before this ongoing nightmare with Big Bill I would mute the tube when the commercials came on but now it’s the opposite.

Then there are the pre produced bits where Bill is actually kind of entertaining but those pre recorded pieces coupled with his verbose game time commentary are just too much to stomach, sorry.

Then there is the snarky comments Bill constantly directs towards his very patient play by play partner. Once again hard to listen to!

I think it’s time for Bill to retire.
