The first real “test” of the Cronin era, and of Bruin fans, is tonight. The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are a team with lesser talent but with more experience, both in upperclassman and in returning four starters. Then for those watching on TV, this is the first Bill Walton show of the Cronin era. Walton loves offense and UCLA. How will he be when the Bruins likely struggle to score at times during this game?
The first game showed that this was a team that would hustle and dive for loose balls. This is a team that is learning to play defense. But, can someone on this team play offense besides Tyger Campbell? Point guard Tyger played 38 minutes against Long Beach State and has led UCLA in scoring in both the exhibition game and first regular season game. Will Bill Walton be saying that Jules Bernard just “made one of the 10 greatest drives in history” as he tries to force his way into the paint for a turnover or miss? To put it charitably, how much of a work in progress will the offense be?
This game is going to be tough but it will be part of the process of the team adapting to having a new coach and learning that basketball is a full court game.
