Today’s College Football Saturday begins your day with the #4 Penn State Nittany Lions visiting the #17 Minnesota Golden Gophers at 9:00 am PT. If you aren’t familiar with the Golden Gophers, they are actually undefeated going into this contest. So, this game will really show whether or not they are deserving of a place in the national spotlight. Six teams ranked higher than Minnesota have two losses, so they will be looking to make a statement today in order to move up in the rankings.
Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan has gone largely unnoticed this season, but the media isn’t to blame for this one. The Gophers owe a lot of their success to their run game and senior running back Rodney Smith. Penn State should not take these guys for granted, and if there was going to be a major upset today, this game will be it. Today will show if Minnesota can eat at the adults’ table.
The marquee matchup for today, and probably the most anticipated game today, will be #2 LSU Tigers visiting the #3 Alabama Crimson Tide at 12:20 pm PT. LSU leap frogged Alabama when the first CFP rankings came out this week, but this is not the first time these two have met ranked back to back. LSU was ranked #1 and Alabama was #2 back in 2011. Hopefully this year, the score will be a little higher than 9-6. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a high ankle sprain on October 19, and his playing status for today will be a game time decision. At this point, Alabama is going to need him to play in order to keep pace with LSU’s rolling offense.
Right now, a spot in the four-team college football playoff could be on the line. If Alabama loses, and LSU, Clemson, Ohio State, and Penn State continue to run the table, it’s a distinct possibility that the Crimson Tide could miss the playoffs this year and also the SEC conference championship, depending on how LSU finishes the season. When was the last time Alabama actually ended the season in a regular old bowl game?
Additionally, Southern Cal will visit Arizona State at 12:30 pm PT, which could end up being a big game in deciding the winner of the Pac-12 South. With Utah, Southern Cal, and UCLA all vying for first place, every game for the remainder of the season matters. If Southern Cal loses, they will fall behind UCLA and get further away from the title game. Today, it’s pretty safe to say that Bruin fans are going to be rooting for the Sun Devils.
