Kirkwood made his pledge official on Thursday night, committing to the Bruins over at least 12 other scholarship offers. He ranks as the nation’s 231st-best overall athlete for the class of 2021 and the 15th-best athlete in the class.
Kirkwood hails from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena and ranks as the 22nd-best player from the state of California.
He’s likely a defensive back at the next level as the 6’3, 175-pounder plays all over the field at the high school level.
247Sports lead expert Greg Biggins had this to say on Kirkwood:
Long 6-3 corner who could also transition to safety. Good athlete who runs well and covers a ton of ground. Rare to see players with his kind of length have his ability to cover and shadow receivers down the field but Kirkwood shows the ability. He’s not a long strider, he has good short area quickness and closing speed and has the top end speed to run down the field with a receiver as well. He’s very lean and will need to add some size and strength but his upside is very high. Projects as an impact upper tier Power 5 starter and future mid round NFL draft pick.
He compares to current Green Bay Packers CB Kevin King and projects (at this early of a stage) as a 4-7 round pick in the NFL draft. Kirkwood is now the highest-rated commit of the 2021 class and the only four-star on the commitment list to date.
Welcome to Westwood, Devin!
