Congratulations to UCLA football player Darnay Holmes and gymnast Madison Kocian who were officially recognized as the Bruins’ Tom Hansen Medal recipients for the 2019-20 school year.
The Tom Hansen Medal is given annually by the conference to each member universities outstanding male and female student-athletes, based upon the exhibition of greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Kocian, the second female gymnast to win NCAA, World and Olympic championships was also a seven-time All-American during her time at UCLA. She’s one of the most decorated gymnasts of all-time and had two career perfect 10s on the uneven bars as well as a crucial addition during the team’s 2018 NCAA Championship run.
She also garnered a ton of awards for her efforts in the classroom. She was selected as the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this offseason and earned three Scholastic All-American honors during her time at UCLA. SHe finished with a 3.846 GPA and qualified for the AD’s Honor Roll in every single quarter she was enrolled at UCLA.
Holmes, most recently drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, was a stalwart on the backend of the team’s secondary. He led the team in interceptions for each of his three seasons and had three touchdowns in his career. He was an honorable mention All-Pac-12 team member in 2018 and 2019 and was just as decorated in the classroom.
Holmes finished on the AD Honor Roll in four quarters and even spurned his Darnay Holmes Mentorship Program while at UCLA.
Congratulations to both Darney and Madison for their accomplishments during their time at UCLA!
