The 2020 UCLA Bruins football season is cancelled, or at the very least postponed until the next calendar year. High school sports have somewhat followed suit but some states are actively playing their high school football seasons this month.
Let’s take a look at those committed to UCLA for 2021, and whether or not they’re playing football this fall. And how you could possibly follow along.
4-star ATH Devin Kirkwood — Junipero Serra High School, Gardena, CA
The CIF-Southern Section is scheduled to start practice on December 14, and their season is scheduled to start on January 8. No official word from Kirkwood as to whether or not he’s going to play this winter, but all signs point to yes at this time.
3-star OT Thomas Cole — San Luis Obispo High School, San Luis Obispo, CA
Cole plays within the CIF-Central Section, which also begins practice on December 14, with their season starting January 7, 2021. No word yet from Cole on whether or not he’s going to play, so we’ll just assume yes in this case until proven otherwise.
3-star WR Keontez Lewis — East St. Louis High School, East Saint Louis, IL
The Illinois High School Association has pushed football (and other fall sports) back to February, and though practice dates remain unknown, the football season’s first week is scheduled for February 15, 2021. Lewis was counting down the days on Twitter until the season started, but abruptly stopped when the season was pushed back. We’ll say he’s excited to resume practice, for sure.
3-star OLB Devin Aupiu — Pacifica High School, Oxnard, CA
Pacifica is part of the CIF-Southern Section and begins practice on December 14. Aupiu has not stated either way about playing, so again we’ll assume he is. The first games are scheduled for January 8, 2021.
3-star WR Ezavier Staples — Millikan High School, Long Beach, CA
Staples plays in the CIF-Southern Section, and again starts the season on January 8, 2021 with practices starting on December 14. No official word from Staples on his playing status for this season but like the rest of the players here in California, they’re ones to monitor if they do decide to sign in December and potentially enroll early.
3-star QB Kajiya Hollawayne — San Jacinto High School, San Jacinto, CA
Playing also in the CIF-Southern Section, Hollawayne, like so many others on this list, have not publicly stated their intentions to possibly forgo the winter/spring season in lieu of enrolling early, but we’ll continue to monitor. Practices start for Hollawayne on December 14, and games start January 8, 2021.
3-star WR DJ Justice — Lincoln High School, San Diego, CA
Justice plays within the CIF-San Diego Section, which also begins practice on December 14, and starts their season with games on January 7, 2021.
3-star OT Garrett DiGiorgio — Serrano High School, Phelan, CA
Shocker, another CIF-Southern Section player, DiGiorgio has practices starting December 14 and games starting on January 8, 2021. No word yet on official play from the 3-star tackle, but we’ll closely monitor.
3-star ATH Isaiah Newcombe — Casteel High School, Queen Creek, AZ
The first on our list with a season still scheduled, the Arizona Interscholastic Association has practices slated to begin on September 7 and games scheduled as early as September 30. The state championships are slated for December 11-12, and Newcombe could get a full season in before signing in December.
3-star RB Deshun Murrell — Bibb County High School, Centreville, AL
The Alabama High School Athletic Association didn’t do much with their high school sports season, and practices began on August 20. Murrell’s first game of his senior season is scheduled for this Friday, August 28, against Fayette County.
3-star DE Tyler Kiehne — Los Lunas High School, Los Lunas, NM
The New Mexico Activities Association moved football to spring, the first to do it, and practices are still to be determined. The season is scheduled to start as early as February 22, 2021, and Kiehne hasn’t stated his intentions one way or another yet.
3-star C Benjamin Roy — Liberty High School, Henderson, NV
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association moved their season back to February 20, 2021 as a start date for practices and first games scheduled for March 5, 2021. They don’t expect to host state playoffs this year, and as such, Roy’s Liberty High School cannot defend their state championship. Roy has not stated whether or not he’ll play yet.
