UCLA Softball Sweeps Weekend Doubleheaders

UCLA swept a pair of double headers against Cal St Fullerton (6-2, 10-4) and Loyola Marymount (11-1, 6-1) on Saturday and Sunday.

The first game started on a down note as Rachel Garcia was hurt legging out a single to first base in the top of the first inning. Unable to return to pitch, Megan Faraimo (7 innings, 5 H, 2 R, 7 K) was pressed into service unexpectedly. Clearly surprised, Faraimo yielded back-to-back home runs in the 1st inning, then shut out the Titans allowing only 3 hits the rest of the game. The Bruin offense squandered multiple scoring opportunities generating only 6 runs on 8 hits and 9 walks while stranding 12 runners.

The malaise continued in the second game as Holly Azevedo (4 innings, 4 H, 4 R, 1BB, 4 K) showed the rust yielding a grand slam in the 2nd inning. Megan Faraimo (3 innings, 2 K) shut out CSF the final 3 innings facing only 9 batters. The offense provided 3 runs for the early lead but was dormant after the second inning. The Bruins woke up scoring 7 runs in the top of the 7th to earn the victory (10-4).

UCLA returned with a vengeance Sunday in the first game against Loyola . The offense pummeled the Lions with 6 runs in the bottom of the first and 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th for an 11-1 (5) run rule victory. Holly Azevedo (5 innings, 2 H, 1 R, 1K) seemed to recover her form pitching a perfect game through 3 innings enroute to a complete game victory.

In the second game of the twin bill, Lexi Sosa (5 innings, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K) faced 19 batters in her first start of the year. She looked solid and unveiled a new pitch. Once again, Faraimo (2 innings, 1 H, 4 K) pitched solid in relief. The offense was relentless scoring runs in every inning except the 4th.

Next Game: Feb 24 (Wed) 2:00 PM PT vs San Diego State, Easton Stadium

Notes and Observations:

Like last year, Coach Kelly Inouye Perez was utilizing these games to establish her options.

Although the starting lineup looks to be set, six players (Nickles, Perez, Jordan, Wisz, Washington, Godin) started all 4 games and 3 (Nickles (CF), Perez (SS) and Godin (LF)) batted in the same order throughout the weekend.

Alyssa Garcia appears to be the #1 Catcher (2 starts), but Taylor Edwards and Thessa Malau'ulu each started a game at catcher this weekend.

Anna Vines started 3 out of the 4 games, batted 4/7, BB, HR.

Julie Rodriguez was 1/4 as a pinch hitter.

Maya Brady still out due to COVID-19 restrictions.

All 4 freshmen saw action this weekend.

Malia Quarles, Taylor Sullivan, Sara Rusconi Vicinanza and Jenavee Peres did not see action this weekend.
