UCLA Struggles Winning 2/3 Over the Weekend

UCLA (6-1) lost its first game (1-3) of the year to Oregon (8-0). Megan Faraimo (6 Innings, 6 H, 3R, 2BB, 7 K) struggled at times yielding two homeruns and 2 walks but held the Duck offense to just 3 runs. Oregon’s Brooke Yanez (7 Innings, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10K) baffled the powerful Bruin lineup with a masterful performance. The offense squandered multiple opportunities to score. In the 1st inning Briana Perez (1-3) and Aaliyah Jordan (1-3) were stranded when Delanie Wisz (0-3) and Maya Brady (1-3, 1 R) struck out. In the 5th, Anna Vines (1-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB) took a wide turn at 3rd and was thrown out ending the inning. With one out in the top of the 7th, the Bruins bases loaded the bases when pinch hitter Julie Rodriguez (0-1) and Bubba Nickles (0-4) struck out to end the game. The Bruins managed only 7 baserunners and stranded 5 of them.

UCLA beat Oregon in the second game (9-3). Holly Azevedo (3 innings, 4 H, 3 R 3 BB, 2K) had a shaky start. Megan Faraimo (4 innings, 3 H, 4 K) came in relief. The defense was problematic. Anna Vines had an error and 2 "didn’t get there". Maya Brady crashed into Bubba Nickles in center allowing a fly ball to drop. Fortunately, the offense came alive (.290, 9 H 9 R 7 RBI 2 BB 2 HR) burning through 3 Oregon pitchers Jordan Dail (1 2/3, 3H, 4 R, K), Reagan Breedlove (2/3 inning, 1 H, 1 R, 1BB, 1K) and Mackenna Kliethermes (4 2/3 innings, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6K)

In the final game of the weekend, UCLA edged Utah (6-5). The Bruin pitching staff (Lexi Sosa (2 innings, 2 H, 2 R, 4K) and Holly Azevedo (1 2/3 innings, 3 H, 3 R, 2 K)) struggled early until Megan Faraimo (3 1/3 innings, 6K) entered to shutdown the Utah hitters. The UCLA offense (.300 10 H, 6 R) managed to score 3 runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good.

Notes and Observations

Megan Faraimo (1-1, 1SV, 13 1/3 inning, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 20K 1.57 ERA) had a solid weekend.

Holly Azevedo (1-0, 4 2/3 innings, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 6.00 ERA) and Lexi Sosa (0-0, 2 innings, 2 H, 2 R, 4 K, 7.0 ERA) struggled.

Maya Brady (0.90, R, RBI), Anna Vines (.200, 2 RBI, BB, DBL) and Kinsley Washington (.200) struggled against a higher quality of pitching.

The joy that the team exhibited last year seems to be missing.

The ASU students broadcasting on the streaming service were annoying at best.
