UCLA Softball swept all five games this week run ruling four while yielding only one unearned run.
The Bruins hosted first year division 1 UC San Diego (1-3) in a rescheduled game Tuesday (3/9).
Megan Faraimo (6-1, 0.96 ERA) started for the Bruins and pitched a complete game (7 Inning, 3 H, R, 0 ER, 12 K) as UCLA won 7-1. Robyn Wampler (11-3, 1.13 ERA) started for the Tritons. The UCLA offense (.357, 7 R, 7 RBI, 4 BB, 4 DBL) started quickly scoring 5 runs in the first two innings. Wampler (4 Inning, 9 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 4K) was chased yielding to Kaia Simpson (0-1, 3.50). Simpson shut the Bruins down for the rest of the game (2 inning, H, 2K)
UCLA (11-1) hosted UC Santa Barbara (2-9) in a double header on Thursday (3/11)
The Bruins shut out (8-0 (5)) the Gauchos in the first game. Starter Holly Azevedo (2-0, 3.38 ERA) seemed shaky (4 2/3 Inning, 6 H, 2 BB, 2K) allowing 8 runners on base but managed to strand all 8. Rachel Garcia (1-0, 0.00 ERA) entered to strike out the last batter. Emily Shuttish (3-1, 1.08 ERA) started for UCSB and limited the UCLA offense to 1 unearned run through 3 innings. The Bruins erupted in the bottom of the 4th inning on a Bubba Nickle’s (2/3, R, 4 RBI, HR) grand slam. Delanie Wisz (1/3, R, RBI, HR) opened the 5th with a home run, chasing Shuttish (4 Inning, 8 H, 6 R, BB, 2K). Alyssa Molina (0-3, 6.75 ERA) entered in relief. Maya Brady (1/1, 2 R, RBI, HR) hit a home run after working the count full. Kinsley Washington (2/2, 2 R, 2 RBI) hit a bunt single, stole 2nd and advanced to third as the throw dribbled into center field. Pinch hitter Thessa Malau'ulu (1/1, RBI) singled to right field for the walk off score.
UCLA carried the momentum into the second game run ruling (8-0 (5)) UCSB. Lexi Sosa (1-0, 2.10 ERA) started for the Bruins holding the Gauchos in check (3 Inning, 2 H, 2 BB, 4K). Rachel Garcia (2 Inning, 5K) finished the game striking out 5 of the last 6 batters. The UCLA offense battered UCSB starter Felisha Noriega (0-4, 4.71 ERA) (2 Inning, 5 H, 6 R, 3 BB, K) and reliever Lexi Campbell (0-0, 3.50 ERA) (2 Inning, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, K) with home runs by Briana Perez, (1/2, R, RBI, HR), Delanie Wisz (1/1, R, 4 RBI, HR) and Alyssa Garcia (1/3, R, 2 RBI, HR) completing the sweep.
UCLA hosted UNLV (11-4) in a double header on Friday (3/12)
In the first game, Rachel Garcia (1-0, 0.00 ERA) started strong (3 K, 16 pitches) striking out the side in the top of the first. She (5 Inning, H, 2 BB, 14 K) continued to pitch well as the Bruins run ruled UNLV (10-0 (5)). The offense scored 4 runs in the first chasing Rebel starter Jenny Bressler (5-2, 2.56 ERA) (1 Inning, 4 H, 4 R, 3 BB, K). Reliever Kaylie Northrup (0-1, 8.22 ERA) fared even worse (1 2/3 Inning, 3 H, 6 R, 6 BB) yielding 4 runs in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd. Jasmine Martin (1-1, 5.25 ERA) finished (1 1/3 Inning, H, 2 K) closing out as the Bruins emptied their bench.
In the second game, Megan Faraimo (7-1, 0.81 ERA) started, and it was Déjà vu all over again. She struck out the side in the first inning on 16 pitches. She proceeded to mow the Rebels down (5 Inning, H, 12 K) as the Bruins run ruled (8-0 (5)) UNLV. The offense started a little slower scoring only 3 runs until the bottom of the 5th. Rachel Garcia (1/3, R, RBI, HR) led off the 5th inning with a home run. Delanie Wisz (2/3) followed with a single. Anna Vines (2/3, 2 R, 2 RBI, DBL) doubled scoring Alana Snow who pinch ran for Wisz. Kinsley Washington (0/1, R, 2 BB) walked. Vines scored on a wild pitch with Washington advancing to third. Kelli Godin (1/3, R, 2 RBI, HR) hit her first career home run for the walk off win.
Notes and Observations:
Kelli Godin showed she can do more than slap and bunt. Pitchers were throwing low and outside making it difficult for her. Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez would pinch hit for her with runners on 3rd.
