UCLA Softball Week in Review (3/1 – 3/7)

UCLA Softball was scheduled for 3 games this week.

UCLA (8-1) run ruled (9-1 (5)) CSU Fullerton (9-7) on Wednesday (3/3).

Holly Azevedo (1-0 5.27) started for the Bruins, pitching a 3 hit complete game (5 Innings, 3 H, R, 2BB, 4 K). UCLA’s offense (.455 BA, 9R, 9 RBI, 7BB) started strong scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st chasing Titans starter Savannah Serratta (2/3 Innings, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, K). Sophie Frost (3 1/3 Inning, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 2K) pitched well in relief but was replaced in the bottom of the 5th by Ellie Zellian (1/3, 3H, 3 R, 2 BB). Dani Martinez replaced a struggling Zellian for one batter yielding the walk off Base on Error (BOE).

Notes and Observations:

Briana Perez (1/2, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, SB), Aaliyah Jordan (2/2, R, RBI 1 BB), Kinsley Washington (2/3, R, 2 RBI) and Kelli Godin (2/2, R, BB) continued their hot hitting.

Delanie Wisz (0/3, R, BB) replaced Alyssa Garcia (HBP) at catcher in the 2nd inning.

Anna Vines (1/2, RBI, BB) looking more comfortable at second, made a spectacular in the 2nd inning with a diving stop and shotput throw to first.

Maya Brady (1/3, R, 3 RBI) emerged from her slump and drove in the walk off run with a BOE hit in the bottom of the 5th.

Saturday’s (3/6) game against Long Beach State was cancelled due to Covid concerns.

UCLA (9-1) run ruled (14-0 (5)) San Jose St. (3-7) on Sunday (3/7).

Lexi Sosa got the start (1-0 2.62 ERA) against Jenessa Ullegue (3-2 2.85 ERA). Sosa (2 Innings, BB, K) pitched 2 innings and was relieved by RACHEL GARCIA!!! (3 Innings, 8 K). Garcia no hit the Spartans striking out 8 of the 9 last batters and added a double in her only at bat. The Bruin offense (.542 BA, 14 R, 14 RBI, 2 BB, 6 DBL, 3 HR) put on a hitting clinic chasing Ullegue (3 2/3 Innings, 9 H, 7 R, K) and Caroline Bowman (1/3 Inning, 4 H, 7 R, 2 BB).

Notes and Observations:

RACHEL’s back!!!

Delanie Wisz (1-2) started for the second time at catcher.

Thessa Malau’ ulu (2-2 3 R, 2 RBI 2 DBL) looked really good in her second start (1 assist).

Briana Perez (2-2, 3 R, RBI, HR, HBP), Aaliyah Jordan (2-3, 3 RBI, DBL), and Kinsley Washington (3-3, 2 R, 4 RBI, DBL, HR) continued their offensive rampage.

Maya Brady (1-3, 3 RBI, HR) continued working out of her slump with a 3 run HR in the 4th.

Defensive Highlight was Washington diving to her left and then crawling to 1st to get the out.

Offensive Highlight was Perez almost running down Bubba Nickles (0-2, BB, SF) in the 4th on Jordan’s double.
