Apparently there were several issues behind this resignation, including player transfers (sounds like Ben Ball post Final Fours). But the key comment in the article is the fact that "the bar is being raised much higher for sports on the Farm." This is a school which wins the Directors' Cup every year for having the most balanced program in the country. And they now have a football team making appearances in January bowl games with regularity. And they want to raise the bar? Meanwhile, our AD defines his job as "managing expectations". Where is the barf bag?

The SEC commissioner presumably doesn't speak without some sense that the teams in the conference are generally on board. And, as can be seen in the link, the SEC says if they don't get their way in areas like more autonomy for the power conferences (SEC, Pac-12, Big 12, Big 10, ACC), then they would move to set up a new subdivision. This will be new math. Normally the higher the number, the smaller the school offerings in athletics (D-3 is not D-1). But now D-4 would be where the January bowl teams reside. My guess is that Block would go along, without knowing anything about this, because he would think D-4 has even less athletic emphasis than D-3.
