UCLA Football Coach Jim Mora explained his concerns about social media, fixing the UCLA uniforms, and the state of the offensive line during his post-lunch interview.

When Jim Mora sat down with media members after lunch yesterday, he took the time to explain how he is trying to advise UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen regarding his posts on social media. Mora very much sounded like the father of four kids that he is. He spoke about how they are always looking at their phones and mentioned how his own kids sometimes can have the "attention span of a gnat."

Yet, Mora stressed the importance of allowing his players to express their individuality in a responsible way.

He explained that he had Josh speak with Rams GM Les Snead who told Rosen that NFL teams look at everything before giving a kid $40 million.

Mora seems to understand that college students are going to make mistakes. But, he added:

You try to help them learn how to not make the fatal error. You know, the one they can never recover from. Saying something or doing something that offends such a large majority of the population or is illegal that you can never recover from.

Coach Mora also discussed the changes that are being made to the Bruins’ uniforms this year. Mora said:

I try to stay in tune with what people want. I think it’s important that we represent the alums and our university and those that care about our program and the way they want to be represented. And, one of the issues has always been the color of the jersey, the shoulder stripe and the shine on the pants.

We finally found a way to address those issues and we did. I think the uniforms are great. The shoulder stripe is about as good as you can get it with technology today. The shine on the pants is even better. The blue has been softened.

Our players love the look. I love the look. I think it’s traditional. We put the numbers back on the shoulders. I’ve always been a traditionalist and, to me, it’s as traditional as you can get in this day and age.

He added that there will be a navy blue alternate with a different font but it will still have a traditional look to it.

Mora mentioned that, even though, the Wasserman Center won’t be done until May 2017, it’s already having an impact on recruiting because they can show recruits the renderings as well as the frame of the building that’s already up.

As a follow-up, he was asked about the length of the practice fields and he said that they would still have 2 80-yard fields. He called them "enough". He didn’t really seem to care about the length, saying "When you’re practicing, you rarely use 100 yards."

Last year at Pac-12 Media Days, Bruins Nation had its first opportunity to sit down and talk with Coach Mora and, channeling his inner John Madden, he gave a very detailed explanation about why evading a pass rush isn’t as simple as "just running more slants."

This year, we asked about the situation with Jake Raulerson and how that might affect Coach Mora’s recruitment of graduate transfers in the future. Mora answered:

I was disappointed. This was a young man who was admitted to Stanford and Michigan. He graduated from Texas in three years with a 3.4. But we couldn’t find a way to get him into UCLA and that was disappointing. We were depending on him. We recruited him hard and he was a part of our recruiting class.

It changes the dynamics of our offensive line dramatically. He is a veteran player that we were counting on to come in and help us, but that’s the way it goes. And, especially in the public school system here in California, you have to be prepared for those things. So, we just adjust and someone will have to step up.

The experience hasn’t changed Mora’s view on graduate transfers. They still aren’t looking to populate the team with transfers, but he called Raulerson "special and unique." Mora added that he met their recruiting profile.

He also called the offensive line a "work in progress", but added that it will always be a work in progress.

My apologies for the fact that the video is split into multiple parts. It was an issue with the camera.

UCLA Tackle Conor McDermott post-lunch interview at 2016 Pac-12 Media Days | Joe Piechowski

Yesterday, after lunch Bruin Tackle Conor McDermott discussed ice cream flavors, bowling and why he never used Josh Rosen’s hot tub.

Bruin offensive lineman Conor McDermott sat down at the table with a cup of ice cream in his hand. It was a little bit of a welcome sight because UCLA fans want lineman to be as big and strong as possible. But, McDermott was disappointed when he heard that he had missed out on the best flavor Dulce Caramel Crunch (which "represented" Oregon for some reason known only to the Conference’s organizers). He noted that he had opted for standard vanilla.

But he did seem to be having a good time at the Pac-12 Media Days. Like teammate Jayon Brown, McDermott spoke about the bowling event held on Thursday night for the players. He mentioned that the first game he finished in third place with a 101, but also expressed frustration about not being able to bowl with a curve ball.

"What I can’t figure out is how people spin the ball," McDermott said. "I’m straight down the line and, if I’m off, it’s off."

When asked how good Brown was, McDermott replied that Jayon was "talking a little much" by exaggerating how well he did. While Conor admitted he wasn’t paying too much attention to what Jayon was doing in the next lane over, he did add that Jayon "was probably all talk."

He also noted that Southern Cal’s Zach Banner and Adoree’ Jackson were talking quite a bit of smack talking during the event.

On a football team, the quarterback usually tries to take care of his linemen. So, I asked if Josh Rosen had ever invited the linemen over to hang out in his hot tub. McDermott admitted that he had been invited over a few times, but that he never took Rosen up on the invite. "I was afraid I’d break the thing," McDermott said. "I’d pop it or, right when I got in, it would just overflow....Then, UCLA would be really mad."

Jayon Brown post-lunch interview at 2016 Pac-12 Media Days | Joe Piechowski

Yesterday, after lunch Bruin linebacker Jayon Brown discussed the new 4-3 defense, bowling against the other Pac-12 reps and how he feels about spending only a week in San Bernardino.

Friday afternoon, Bruin linebacker Jayon Brown sat down with the media at the 2016 Pac-12 Media Days.

Brown spoke about bowling against the team representatives from the other Pac-12 schools, the strength and conditioning program, and some of his favorite eateries.

He’s definitely happy about only having to go to San Bernardino for one week instead of two. Brown said:

Everybody on the team I know is hyped up for that because the Dino is hot. It’s dry. It’s not a lovely place. Sorry for all the people out there in the IE, but...I’m happy. I’m happy. Real happy.

He certainly seems comfortable as a captain of the defense. He said, "I feel like I know the defense." He added:

It’s my defense. I know the ins and outs of it. I know out weaknesses...how to disguise better....I know where everybody has to fit in....As a captain of the defense, I’ve got to keep everybody accountable and they keep me accountable and if we all do our jobs, we should come out victorious.

He also discussed the changes to the UCLA defense. He thinks that the switch from the 3-4 to the 4-3 will help the team stop the run better. On the change, Brown said:

We’ll be more sound on the run. As you guys know, people were running all over us last year. We want to put a stop to that. The 4-3 is making our run game really, really legit.

Jim Mora answers questions from the media at Pac-12 Football Media Days in Hollywood, CA. | Joe Piechowski

UCLA Coach Jim Mora talked about a lot of different topics during his session at the 2016 Pac-12 Football Media Days. Among other things, the media asked him about Tom Bradley, Josh Rosen and Social Media, and why the team is only spending one week in San Bernardino.

This morning, it was Jim Mora’s turn to speak with the media regarding the upcoming UCLA Football season.

And, it didn’t take long before Mora was asked about the situation with his defensive coordinator Tom Bradley. The second question to Coach Mora was about Bradley.

Echoing his earlier comments to ESPN.com, Mora spoke about his concern for Jerry Sandusky’s victims, support for Bradley along with the vetting process that Bradley went through.

But, before Mora was asked about Bradley, he was asked about the fact that UCLA was picked to win the Pac-12 South in the Pac-12 Media preseason poll. "First of all, it surprised me. I thought that USC, Utah, Arizona State, Arizona, and Colorado I thought those teams would have been picked ahead of us just based on the way we finished last year in a disappointing fashion."

Wait...what? Did he really think UCLA would be picked to finish last in the South? I had to do a double take and watch the video I shot to see if he had really thought UCLA would be picked to finish last in the division, but he did.

But, later in the interview, he called the team is hungry. He said, "Hungry. Hungry. Hungry. Anxious. Challenged. Excited. I think there's just a real good esprit de corps amongst our team, one like I haven't seen maybe since my first year there, and that excites me."

As far as the McQueary deposition, Mora was asked if the allegations from the McQueary testimony was that known as a part of the vetting process. He had this to say:

Well, first of all, any time that you're dealing with sexual abuse and you're dealing with young people specifically, the first thing that you have to think about is the victims, and our hearts go out to the victim. As a father of four young children, I can't imagine the horror of being in that position, and I can't think of anything that could be more horrifying as a parent or as a victim. Our first thoughts is towards that.

Tom is a man of integrity that was heavily vetted, not just by UCLA but by others, as well. We went through a lengthy process in determining whether or not we wanted to make that hire. From our chancellor on down, everybody was involved in the decision and took it very, very seriously, knowing what the accusations had been at Penn State, not with regards to Tom but just in general. So yeah, that was part of the vetting process. We were privy to as much information as was available at that time.

That’s exactly what many of us wanted to hear from UCLA after the release of the McQueary deposition earlier this week because no one from UCLA had really spoken about the vetting process until now.

He was also asked more specifically about the information which was in the McQueary deposition and whether any further review was done because of it. Mora responded:

No. Tom made a statement through his lawyer, through his attorney, his agent, Brett Senior. I think it was very specific. I think this is a situation that has obviously been delved into at great depth, and I think Tom will stand by his statement. I'll stand by his statement, and we'll all stand by Tom and what he didn't do and what he didn't know.

He also was asked about the change to training camp from two weeks in San Bernardino to only one.

I have liked San Bernardino, and I still do like San Bernardino, and I think it serves us well to go out there. But, quite frankly, we were out there too long, and that first week you're only allowed one practice a day, and it became a little bit more of a grind and a burden on our players and our staff than I'd really like.

So what we're going to do is that first week we're going to stay at the new Luskin Center there, that beautiful new hotel on campus right at our fields. We're going to use our facilities. We'll have one practice a day. We'll have our normal walk-throughs and meetings, and then we're going to do some team activity things, some things that are a little bit different, just some team bonding things. We're bringing in some great speakers and things like that, and then we'll go out to San Bernardino that second week. We'll have two-a-days, and we're going to have nine practices in six days and really get after it and really grind, and then we'll come back and get ready for the season.

We just felt as a staff that at this point in our development that was the best way for us to go.

Another topic was came up was a question about Josh Rosen’s use of social media and Mora took advantage of the chance to more clearly present his thoughts on the matter including a reflection on the history of UCLA student-athletes taking a stance on social/political issues.

The hot tub I found amusing. I thought it was -- I thought it was a young college student having a little bit of fun. You know, the Donald Trump tweet and then the NCAA tweet, we had conversations about that and about the appearance, about the image that he's projecting for himself and for his University. But I'll tell you this: UCLA has a long history going back to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was Lew Alcindor at the time, and Bill Walton, of having people on their campus that are socially aware and not afraid to rattle the cage a little bit.

I just want to make sure that Josh understands that this is a different world and that everything that he does say is being analyzed and sometimes overanalyzed, and that he's making good decisions and thinking twice before he speaks once, and more for his future than anything else.

But he's a young man, and he's got his own thoughts, and we want to encourage that. But at the same time we want to be socially responsible.

On the injury front, Mora mentioned that Eddie Vanderdoes, Fabian Moreau and Johnny Johnson have all been medically cleared to practice when Fall Camp opens on August 8th.

He also addressed Josh Rosen’s use of social media. His comments were more tempered than they were earlier in the year when he appeared on the Rich Eisen Show.

He mentioned that he found the hot tub amusing and that he thought it was "a young college student having a little bit of fun." And, while he said that he had had conversations with Rosen about the Trump and NCAA/Under Armour tweets, he said:

[T]he Donald Trump tweet and then the NCAA tweet, we had conversations about that and about the appearance, about the image that he's projecting for himself and for his University. But I'll tell you this: UCLA has a long history going back to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was Lew Alcindor at the time, and Bill Walton, of having people on their campus that are socially aware and not afraid to rattle the cage a little bit.

But he's a young man, and he's got his own thoughts, and we want to encourage that. But at the same time we want to be socially responsible.

When asked why Rosen wasn’t here, he said that he rewards two upperclassmen by bringing them, rather than trying to hide Josh. He added that Rosen will be available for interviews on Mondays during the season.

Videos of Mora’s media session are below.

UCLA Football Coach Jim Mora spoke to ESPN.com at Pac-12 Media Days and offered his thoughts on UCLA Defensive Coordinator Tom Bradley and this week's release of the deposition of former Penn State coach Mike McQueary.

At Pac-12 Media Days on Thursday, UCLA Football Coach Jim Mora spoke with ESPN.com regarding Bruin defensive coordinator Tom Bradley:

I know this about Tom: He is a man of integrity. He's been vetted by a number of different people as well as UCLA -- very, very thoroughly. It took us a long time to hire him because our university takes these things very seriously. So we went through the process of vetting his background and his stories and he made a statement and he stands by that statement and I stand by him. I feel comfortable with that.

This is the most detailed explanation of the vetting process which went into Bradley's hiring that anyone associated with UCLA has offered.

Mora also said that he isn't just standing up for his defensive coordinator.

The Washington State coach spoke about topics like Brexit, the Heisman Trophy and Pokemon Go.

It’s the second and final day of the 2016 Pac-12 Football Media Days. As far as Bruin fans are concerned, today is the day to pay the most attention as Jim Mora, Conor McDermott and Jayon Brown will meet with the media today.

To recap yesterday, Commissioner Larry Scott opened the day yesterday and, while he still had no news on the DirecTV front, he announced that Frontier (formerly Verizon) FiOS subscribers in Southern California will have Pac-12 Networks added to their lineup in time for this football season. He also announced that Comcast and Cox have designated the Pac-12 Network national feed as their primary network across the West.

Scott said, "[T]his is good news for fans who, no matter where they live, can watch their favorite football team play this season, get all football teams and the majority of Pac-12 basketball games." Previously, the localized network had been designated as the primary network, meaning that a Bruin fan in Northern California, for instance, might miss a UCLA game because it wasn’t available on Pac-12 Bay Area.

As far as the coaches go, Washington State head coach Mike Leach cemented his status as a possible successor as the "most interesting man in the world" should Dos Equis ever decide to bring him back.

This year, Leach opined on topics such as Brexit and the quality of American football internationally. Heisman voter and friend of Bruins Nation Lisa Horne asked him about the Pokemon Go craze. Leach didn’t seem to know about it. After having it briefly explained, Leach replied:

Well, I've seen them doing that for the last 10 years, but nobody talks to people anymore. I mean, there's people won't even talk face to face. They'll go across the room and text each other. I think it's actually kind of disturbing. I think the days before cell phones, when it was dirt clod wars at construction sites, was a lot more wholesome and productive to be perfectly honest.

He also said he supports expanding the College Football Playoffs to 16 teams.

The Bruins have been picked by the media to win the Pac-12 South, but Stanford is the favorite to win the Pac-12 Conference Championship Game.

The Pac-12 Conference released its preseason poll of media members who cover the Pac-12 and UCLA has been picked to win the Pac-12 South. Stanford was picked to win the Pac-12 North as well as the conference championship.

A total of 33 media members were polled. The Bruins collected 19 first-place votes and 180 total points to top the South poll, but, indicative of UCLA’s recent troubles with Stanford, only three votes were cast for the Bruins to win the conference championship.

According to a Pac-12 Conference press release, "the media poll has correctly selected the Conference Champion in 29 of 55 previous polls, but only twice in the last nine polls."

Here's the divisional breakdown of the poll. First-place division votes in parentheses.

As for the Pac-12 Conference Championship Game, I mentioned above that Stanford received 20 votes. Southern Cal received 5 votes, Washington got 4 votes, UCLA got 3 votes, and Utah received 1 vote.

So, while the media thinks UCLA will edge out Southern Cal for the South Division championship, they are not convinced that UCLA will win the Conference Championship.
