The players talk about the current state of the program while Chip Kelly opens up about why so many players caught balls at Oregon, whether he has a preferred run-pass mix and the new redshirt rule.

One of the downsides to Pac-12 Media Day is that, while the coaches are at the main podium, the players are off giving their interviews in other parts of the room.

Frequently, that means that someone covering media day has to choose between asking questions of a team’s coach or a team’s players. Well, Matt Joye of BruinReportOnline has posted a video of Josh Woods’ interview session from Wednesday. Thanks to Matt for sharing this.

In this interview, Woods discusses a host of topics ranging from coming back from his injury to adjusting to the tempo of Chip Kelly’s practices to the addition of Wilton Speight.

Meanwhile, there’s been big changes going on with Rivals’ UCLA site. It had been known as the Bruin Sports Report when Edward Lewis was in charge. But Ed left Rivals to become a producer with TMZ Sports and Rivals has brought back Rick Kimbrel to run the site, which has changed its name back to its old name BruinBlitz.com. Rick has been a respected recruiting analyst for a very long time and helped launch Rivals’ UCLA coverage. More recently, Rick ran another UCLA-focused site called BruinBru.com.

At media day, Rick caught up with Josh Woods and Theo Howard. Here is a video of Rick’s interview with Woods. Thanks, Rick! Welcome back!

In this conversation, Woods explains how the team is playing at a different speed than before including the need to get into the best shape while also being as strong as possible. He also spoke about the change to a 3-4 scheme and the need for better tackling.

Next up is Theo Howard. Matt Joye of Bruin Report Online shared this interview he shot with Howard. In the video, Howard talks about how he’s developed since Spring and the new strength program as well as his impressions of Wilton Speight and embracing a leadership role on the team.

Here’s what Howard had to say when Rick Kimbrel interviewed him. Howard tells Kimbrel that the biggest difference in the team offensively is the pace. He also says he has no regrets about choosing to come to UCLA even though the team has had some ups and downs.

We’re going to wrap up our coverage of UCLA Football at Pac-12 Media Day with the Bruins’ new head coach. Bruin Report Online’s Matt Joye also shared a video of Chip Kelly’s sit-down interview. Just a quick warning, though: There’s a lot a background audio which makes it a little hard to hear.

About midway through, Kelly explains why Oregon had so many receivers making catches when he was there. “We had so many guys catch balls because we were blowing them out,” Kelly said. “We were in the first quarter of a game and it’s 35-0. So, we’re like ‘Let’s get the backups in there.’” He also explained why you can’t just look at stats. “Teams that throw the ball a lot [do so] because they are losing....It doesn’t mean that they have a better pass offense than you. It just means that they are behind a lot.”

He also discussed how there isn’t a particular run-pass mix he’s looking for. Kelly explained:

It changes. I’ve been in games...we went back-to-back games in New Hampshire....One game, we ran it 66 times one week. The next week, we won throwing it 65. That’s what it took at each of those games to win. One of them was a really bad weather game and...we ran it 66 and threw it 7 and, the next week, we were in a shootout and we threw it 65 and ran it 40.

Kelly also spoke about the new redshirt rule that allows a player to play up to four games at any time during a season and still keep his redshirt. “I think it’s positive I don’t know exactly how we’ll implement it you know I think you have to do it on a case-by-case basis,” Kelly said.

Kelly’s Pac-12 Media Day interview looked a lot like his first press conference back in November.

New UCLA Football head coach Chip Kelly took the stage at Pac-12 Football Media Day today and it sounded more like his first press conference than his Spring Practice interviews.

Kelly sounded relaxed and seemed to be in a good mood, calling the day “enjoyable.” He even seemed to appreciate the fact that there were a lot members of the media who were interested in what he had to say. “That means we’re doing good things,” Kelly quipped. “So, I know that, if we go 0 for 5, there’s not going to be that many. Let’s just hope we have this turnout again.” Kelly added, “We’re excited about it.”

“For us to be really good at UCLA, we’re going to have to be good on the defensive side of the football.” - Chip Kelly

While Kelly was peppered with questions about grad transfers, aggressive out of conference scheduling, sports betting, and even uniform changes, his answers were a breath of fresh air for Bruin fans.

I think the one of the most revealing answers came in response to a question about whether the team is going to look like his Oregon teams. Skipping the joke he made in November about those players not having any eligibility left, Kelly offered his thoughts pretty thoroughly.

“I think that’s not fair to anybody, to be honest with you,” Kelly said. “Every team has a different dynamic, and I think it’s based upon what your personnel is. So to say that this guy used to coach here so this is going to look like this, I understand that.”

Kelly continued, “Maybe that’s a positive because they want to see what that looks like. But our job is to put our players in position to make plays. And I’m not being evasive. We only have eight seniors.”

So, wait...he’s not using youth and inexperience as an excuse? One has to wonder if Steve Alford was watching today.

“If there are expectations, that’s a good thing. I’d rather be at a place where there are expectations than a place where they don’t care.” - Chip Kelly

While he explained that he still doesn’t know how the team is going to look, he compared it to how a car looks on the outside. “But what we don’t get caught up in is what does it look like, it’s just how does it work. So whether we’re driving a car that looks good on the outside, if it gets me to point A to point B, I’m happy.”

But, then, Kelly, the “offensive genius” threw everyone a curve ball. “If we’re going to be successful at UCLA, it really starts on the defensive side of the ball,” he said.

Take a moment and read that again. Chip Kelly, who was known for his creative offenses at Oregon said that, in order for UCLA to be successful, the Bruins will have to be good defensively.

Kelly, then, went even deeper:

One thing that people don’t realize or maybe just kind of glossed over is when we were really good at Oregon is because we were really good on defense. Our offense got a ton of notoriety. But Dion Jordan, Kiko Alonso, Michael Clay, DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Terrance Mitchell, all guys playing in the NFL right now were tremendous defensive football players. They just didn’t get enough credit.

But we were really good because we were really good on defense. For us to be really good at UCLA, we’re going to have to be good on the defensive side of the football.

Whoa. If that doesn’t get you excited for UCLA Football after the past two seasons, I’m not sure what will.

Before I get to sharing the entire video of Kelly’s session, I want to quickly highlight a few more of the things he said.

On whether UCLA will have any uniform changes:

I think our uniforms are iconic. Sometimes I think the Penn States, the UCLAs, the Alabamas of the world are in -- people can easily identify them. So there are no plans now for us to do it. When I talk to the Troy Aikmans of the world, he likes our uniforms. So if Troy likes them, I like them.

On playing in the “shadow of USC”:

I think you go back to Coach Wooden, and what you learn from Coach Wooden, who has been around a long time, and he didn’t talk about other opponents. He was just concerned with his own team.

I think that’s where sometimes we all have a certain amount of energy to expend on a daily basis. If our energy is going on somewhere else, I think we’re wasting our energy, and how do we improve on a daily basis and continue to get these kids to develop from day one to day two to day three and not be concerned is there a shadow or not a shadow.

The short time I’ve been in Los Angeles, there aren’t many shadows because there aren’t many clouds in the skies. So we’re not concerned about the shadow part of this deal.

On this year’s out-of-conference schedule:

Our schedule this year we play Cincinnati at home at Oklahoma. Fresno State. We have an open day we’re going to play the Tampa Bay Bucs, and then we’re going to start the league conference schedule. No, I love it.

On aggressive out-of-conference scheduling:

Yeah, we played LSU when I was at Oregon. We signed on for that. We played at Michigan. Played at Tennessee. I think when people talk about how to strategically schedule, I think the first time you start thinking about strategically scheduling, you’ve lost because you don’t think you can compete with people. If you want to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best. So if they want to play us, I’ll play anybody.

I’m excited when I looked at our schedule. I think UCLA, USC and Notre Dame are the only three schools that have never played a 1-AA team. That’s part of something that they hang their hat on, and I agree with that. I’d love to play all great teams.

And I know teams want to come play in the Rose Bowl. All those games are really cool home and homes that have been set up. We got Michigan home and home, we have LSU home and home, Georgia home and home. I think Rutgers just dropped us, so they’re trying to fill a hole for that one. It’s a short window, but we’re open to playing anybody.

On injury reports and sports gambling:

I know it’s a big question, and I know it’s about gambling, and they don’t want to say it’s about gambling, but it’s about gambling.

So if you want to support gamblers, tell them who is injured. If you don’t, don’t tell them who is injured. Maybe they’ve got to figure it out on their own. But there’s been gambling everywhere.

It’s not like, when they pass this new rule, people are going to go: Oh, my God, we can gamble now? If you felt like that, you’re living in a hole because there’s been gambling going on for a long time.

On UCLA fans having high expectations and whether fans should temper expectations:

I don’t think my job is to temper or excite them. My job is to prepare our team as best we can to play Cincinnati, you know, and part of that is to not worry about that. And, I think, in this day and age with the kids that we coach, I think they have to learn to kind of block out the outside noise. So, if they have a head coach that’s not blocking out the outside noise, but is telling them to block out the outside noise isn’t the way to do it.

So, we’ve always been pretty good at just kind of focusing and concentrating on what we can get accomplished and what we need to get accomplished. If there are expectations, that’s a good thing. I’d rather be at a place where there are expectations than a place where they don’t care. It’s obvious, in the short time that I’ve been here, that people really care about it. So, no, we’re excited to go out there and play.

In wrapping things up, while there has not been an official announcement, it seems pretty certain from listening to Chip Kelly, UCLA’s Fall Camp will begin next Friday, August 3rd. It is important to note, however, that it’s still unknown whether Fall Camp will be open to the public or closed. Details should be announced very soon.

Go Bruins!!!

It’s always entertaining when Mike Leach steps up to the podium.

When Washington State Cougars head coach Mike Leach steps up to the podium at Pac-12 Media Day, it’s always an adventure. That’s because Leach is one of the more open coaches who talks about how he sees things while mixing in a penchant for the offbeat.

This morning was no different.

Here are some of his more notable quotes from his podium session this morning:

On recruiting players to come play in Pullman and the difference between LA and Pullman:

You know, you guys might love the traffic in L.A. A lot of great things about L.A. You might sit in the car, listen to the radio, look at the person beside you. You know, you get flipped off. I always thought it was kind of funny when somebody flipped me off, couldn’t help but laugh. You know, wait in line for stuff. Well, you don’t get to do that in Pullman, Washington.

So there are sacrifices you make to come up there to Pullman, because you don’t have to plan ahead. It sucks if you want to develop your planning skills. You know, good food is right there. Well, I’d like to wait in line. Well, you can stand there, but I’ll be here at the counter doing nothing, so when you’re ready to order, come order.

On his reaction to the return of Chip Kelly to the Pac-12:

Exactly what it was when he was in the Pac-12. Just watched a bunch of film when we play them, and then put together the best game plan you can, and go play them. But we don’t play them for a year anyways, so. So I’ve got two years to obsess over the return of Chip Kelly. Some people could enjoy it for one, I could enjoy it for two.

On the change to the redshirt rule, allowing players to play in up to four games at any time during the season:

The red-shirt rule. There are so many rules lately. Though I think that’s a good rule. I think that’s a good rule. It approaches five years of eligibility, which I’ve always thought would make things very simple, would be a smart way to do things. It would eliminate a portion of the rule book. Maybe there are those that would like to have as many rules as they can. But, you know, five years of eligibility, then you don’t have all of the appeals and the transfer stuff. But it’s a step towards that, and I think it’s really good for the student-athlete too.

On whether he has concerns about sports betting becoming legal:

Not really. Because I’m going to continue to not bet on sports. The injury thing, I’m not going to -- well, okay. Here are your choices: You’ve got some conferences talking about, all right, having an injury report. Well, let’s start with the fact I’m not a doctor, so I’m not even qualified to say whether a guy is injured or not.

But then you’ve got one federal law that says you’re not allowed to reveal someone’s medical information. Then you’ve got another law that says we have gambling, so we want to know all about their injuries. And I realize that this business of not talking about people’s medical condition gets run roughshod through every year in the NCAA.

But you’re sitting there with two laws that contradict each other, so I’m going to be wrong one way or the other. So I’m not going to reveal injuries, even if I’m qualified to until I’m forced. And they might force me. I doubt it. But they might, and if they do, then I’ll try to figure out a way around it.

Whew! It looks like the Cougars dodged an NCAA bullet after Leach made it sound like he had to ponder whether to start betting on sports.

Here’s the full transcript of Leach’s podium session.

Overall, this year wasn’t Leach most entertaining session as there weren’t as many offbeat questions thrown at him as in year’s past, but it’s still always enjoyable in large part due to his candor. Does anyone think that David Shaw would have said something like “ I’m going to continue to not bet on sports.” Sure, Rick Neuheisel might have said it due to the trouble he got into in Washington if he were still coaching in the Pac-12, but it’s doubtful any other coach would have.

Go Bruins!!

UCLA has been picked to finish 4th in the Pac-12 South.

The Pac-12 Conference has announced the results of the annual preseason media poll and the media doesn’t appear to think that Chip Kelly can overcome UCLA’s challenges to have a very good season.

That’s because the Bruins are picked to finish fourth in the Pac-12 South. UCLA garnered 116 points in the poll including 2 first-place votes.

Southern Cal was picked to finish first with 225 points including 22 first-place votes while Utah was a close second with 209 points including 14 first-place votes. Arizona was picked to finish third with 178 points including 3 first-place votes. Colorado was fifth with 80 points and 1 first-place vote. Arizona State received the least love with just 72 points.

In the North, Washington is the clear favorite with 249 points. The Huskies also received 40 of the 42 first-place votes while Stanford and Oregon each received one first-place vote. Stanford was picked to finish second with 198 points and the Ducks were third with 178 points. UC Berkeley received 108 points to land in fourth place while Washington State picked up 98 points. Oregon State received the fewest points of any Pac-12 school with just 48 points.

Washington is the overwhelming favorite to win the Pac-12 Championship Game as well. The Huskies were selected by 37 of the 42 votes. The two voters who chose Stanford and Oregon to win the North also thought the North winner would win the title game.

Meanwhile, only three voters thought a Pac-12 South school would win the championship game. Two of those three voters selected Southern Cal to win the title while one of UCLA’s two first-place voters thought the Bruins could win it.

In the 57 years that the conference has had a preseason media poll, the media has been correct 30 times. But, they haven’t been as accurate lately. Only three of the last eleven polls have accurately predicted the Conference Champion.

What new initiatives will Larry Scott announce when Pac-12 Footbal Media Day takes place tomorrow?

Wednesday marks the unofficial start of the college football season in the Pac-12 when the conference holds their annual football media day at Hollywood & Highland in Hollywood.

The month of July has been quieter than usual for UCLA Football.

That’s mostly due to the fact that only one Bruin has been named to the watch list of any of the National College Football Award Association awards and that was Caleb Wilson who was named to the Mackey Award watch list.

It’s almost as if the new coaching staff has deliberately avoided submitting the names of anyone for the watch lists. It would be an interesting way to send a message that the team needs to come before individual accolades. It also could be because Chip Kelly and staff don’t feel comfortable submitting the names of anyone based on last year’s performances, especially considering that Chip says that he watched no film from last season.

Whatever the reason for the absence of Bruins from the award watch lists to this point, it has made for a slower than usual July.

That changes tomorrow when the Pac-12 Conference hosts its annual Pac-12 Football Media Day at Hollywood and Highland in Hollywood.

There is a big change this year.

In past years, this was a two-day event which would focus on half the conference one day and the other half the second day. Not so this year as the conference has cut the showcase down to just one day, all at a time when other conferences are actually expanding their events. For instance, the SEC Football Media Days is now a four-day event.

One other change the conference is making has to do with what media outlets are invited to the event. The conference is only allowing fan sites which are credentialed by a member school to attend. The result is that, while other SB Nation sites will be on hand, Bruins Nation will not be there because the UCLA Athletic Department doesn’t credential BN at this time. That also means some other UCLA sites won’t be there either.

But, it’s not all bad news.

There is actually quite a bit of good news with respect to coverage of the annual event. There will be more live coverage than just what you see on the Pac-12 Networks cable channels.

Of course, the Pac-12 Networks will feature their usual live coverage starting with coverage of the Pac-12 North schools from 8:30 am PT until 11:30 am PT. Then, after a short break, coverage will resume at 1 pm PT and go until 4 pm PT with coverage of the Pac-12 South schools including UCLA. Pac-12 Networks will begin the 1 pm coverage with an interview with Chip Kelly while Bruins Theo Howard and Josh Woods will be interviewed at approximately 1:15 pm PT.

But, that’s not all!

There will also be a live stream of Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott’s opening remarks streamed live at 8 am PT to the Pac-12’s Facebook page as well as the @Pac12Network and @Pac12 Twitter accounts, the Pac-12 Networks’ YouTube channel, Pac-12.com and the Pac-12 Now app.

For the first time, all 12 head football coach availabilities at the main stage will be streamed live to the Pac-12’s Facebook page, Pac-12.com and the Pac-12 Now app.

Once each of these live streams has completed, each will be uploaded and available on-demand at Pac-12.com, the Pac-12 Now app and Pac-12 Networks’ YouTube channel.

Additional and extensive coverage across all Pac-12 Networks digital and social media channels, including Pac-12.com, the @Pac12Network and @Pac12 Twitter accounts, the Pac-12’s Facebook page, @Pac12Conference Instagram account, the @pac12conference Snapchat account and Pac-12 Networks’ YouTube channel.

The schedule for this year looks like this:

Notes & Predictions:

A Chip Off Which Block?: Will new UCLA Bruins Head Coach Chip Kelly will be as vague about UCLA as he was during Spring Practice or will the Chip Kelly who was at his introductory press conference show up again? Personally, I think we will get a little bit of both.

Same Side of the Ball: Arizona State and Southern Cal are breaking with tradition by bringing two players from the same side of the ball, instead of one offensive player and one defensive player. ASU will have two offensive players while Southern Cal is bringing two defenders.

The Commish: It should be interesting to see what Larry Scott has to say. The commissioner has come under fire over the past year as it looks like the Pac-12 is falling behind in terms of how much cash each school gets from the conference’s media contracts. Will he finally announce a DirecTV deal? Doubtful.

Must-See Stream: Skip David Shaw on Pac-12 Networks and tune in online to watch Washington State Coach Mike Leach. It will easily be the most enjoyable interview of the day.

The Player To Be Named Later: In case you missed the news earlier today, former UCLA head coach Jim Mora has signed with ESPN and will serve as a studio analyst on ESPN2. Essentially, Mora is taking the job that opened up when Chip Kelly was hired to replace Mora at UCLA. Terms of Mora’s contract have not been disclosed, but whatever he is paid will offset some of his buyout from UCLA.

Get excited! Football season is about to begin!

Go Bruins!!!
