The players are excited about the Friday Night Blackout in Pasadena.

The Bruins went through a light walkthrough today to finalize their preparations before tomorrow night's game at the Rose Bowl. Our favorite Ralph Irvin caught up with a few of the layers after practice to get their thoughts on the game.

QB Brett Hundley and LT Xavier Su'a-Filo both spoke of the athleticism and talent Washington has on the defensive side and that they are going to have to play a very good game to get out of Pasadena with a win.

On the defensive side, LB Jordan Zumwalt noted that Washington will run the same fast tempo offense the Bruins have seen the last several weeks. Zumwalt and safety Anthony Jefferson both spoke about the Huskies talented skill players including QB Keith Price, RB Bishop Sankey, and TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins

Kudos to Ralph for talking up the planned Blackout at the Rose Bowl. I'm glad that someone in Morgan Center is helping the football team spread the word. All four of the players talked about how excited they are to don their new black jerseys for the game and how they are looking forward to seeing the fans in black as well.

I think it's a great thing we're doing with Coach Mora and the all black. Hopefully everyone comes out in all black. That would be pretty sweet, too.

I hope the Bruin fans surprise the players (and all of us) by blacking out the stadium like the team wants (though we know a certain A.D. who hasn't done anything to help them out - which is surprising considering how black is supposed to be slimming).

Make it happen, Bruin fans!

Also on the Official Site was this cool announcement that my favorite football alum, Troy Aikman, is being honored as one of six recipients of the NCAA Silver Anniversary for 2014.

The Silver Anniversary Award annually recognizes distinguished individuals on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of their college athletics careers. The Honors Committee, comprised of representatives of NCAA member schools and nationally prominent former student-athletes, selects each year's recipients.

Aikman is the 10th Bruin to receive this prestigious award. He joins Gail Devers (2013), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (2010), Cormac Carney (2008), Dot Richardson (2008), Ann Meyers Drysdale (2003), Bill Walton (1999), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1994), Willie Naulls (1981), and Don Moomaw (1978).

Aikman ranks 6th for touchdowns and completions and seventh for passing yards all-time, and he accomplished that while only playing two years for the Bruins. He went on to win three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys, went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and is enjoying a very successful career as an analyst for Fox Sports.

Congratulations to Aikman. Although the NCAA missed a few - Arthur Ashe comes to mind - that's a pretty kickass group of names right there

And because we cannot get enough Myles Jack right now, Jack Wang wrote an article for the LA Daily News last night looking at notable two-way players in college football. The list was pretty short. Holy Cross's Gordie Lockbaum was probably the most accomplished, though that was on the D1-AA level. Owen Maricic played linebacker and fullback at Stanford where he was solid but not flashy. The most notable was Michigan's Charles Woodson who parleyed his great athleticism at defensive back into a role as a star kick returner and occasional wide receiver. He won the Heisman in 1997 for his two-way efforts. But as Wang quoted, one former Bruin thinks Jack's performance outranks those.

"He didn't have the same kind of impact that Myles had the other night," [Rick] Neuheisel said.

Our coaches have been mum on whether we'll see Jack and the Young Pack or Old Pack lineup tomorrow night at Washington. But with Jordon James coming off an injury and Paul Perkins and Malcolm Jones haiving little to no success the last few weeks, it's nice that we have a freshman linebacker to fall back on. Either way, the Washington staff is probably working a little extra on the Jack package just in case, and hopefully our coaching staff will already be a couple of steps ahead of them if it gets to that..

The Bruins go through their Thursday routine on Wednesday as they prepare for friday night's game at the Rose Bowl.

It was a quiet media day at Spaulding. With game day coming one day earlier than normal this week, the team went with its Thursday routine and practiced in shells while putting the finishing touches on game plans for Washington. Coach Mora acknowledged the difficulties of getting around Los Angeles on a Friday afternoon, but encouraged fans to get out to the Rose Bowl and that the players appreciate the support. Needless to say that the players would probably appreciate more support from Morgan Center in promoting the game and the blackout, but that would require the sort of enthusiasm and aggressive outreach we never see from them, so the coach repeated the message himself.

Mora was asked about the running back depth for this week. and he went over the roster and discussed their availability, noting that Steven Manfro is still out and that Damien Thigpen will be a game time decision.

They're doing good. Jordon James is fine. Thiggy, gametime decision, hasn't done much this week at all. Steven Manfro is still out. Paul Perkins, good. Malcolm Jones, good. Roosevelt Davis, good. Melvin Emesibe, good. Ryan Davis, good.

Mora was obviously trolling the media at this point, forcing our friend Chris Foster to suggest he "left one out". Not willing to bite, Mora deadpanned, "Who's that?" When Foster dutifully replied, "Myles Jack", Mora simply responded, "He's a linebacker".

Thaks as always to Edward Lewis and Bruin Sports Report (via BSR TV on YouTube)

Also on the injury front, Foster reported that reserve offensive tackle Conor McDermott is now out for the season after having surgery on his injured left shoulder yesterday. McDermott played one series this year, filling in for an injured Simon Goines against Stanford before promptly suffering a separated shoulder. UC Berkeley alum Jack Wang noted in InsideUCLA that Goines has appeared at practice but "still has his right knee wrapped and limps noticeably". That sounds like we should expect Xavier Su'a-Filo to remain at left tackle and freshman Scott Quessenberry to stay at the left guard spot. The Bruins have started that lineup the last three weeks so that group should be continuing to improve as they get more reps together. In the meantime, get well soon, Conor!

The official site announced that a couple more awards for star linebacker Anthony Barr were announced today.

During the practice it was announced that senior linebacker Anthony Barr was named a Walter Camp "Player to Watch" for Player of the Year and a Lott IMPACT Trophy semifinalist. The Walter Camp list is comprised of 15 student-athletes while Barr was one of nine named to the Lott Trophy list.

Though Barr was held off the score sheet last Saturday (which is not the only time he was held that day), his presence on the defense is having a big impact as opposing teams are going overboard to scheme for him, and he is still hurrying or rerouting opposing quarterbacks. He has really become a complete linebacker this season as he has added more pass coverage and positioning responsibilities to his game. Still, I suspect he'll be anxious to make his presence more tangible this <strike>Saturday</strike> Friday.

News and notes from UCLA’s practices and on the Huskies as the Bruins get ready take on Washington at the Rose Bowl.

Let's pick up where we left of yesterday. Yesterday when Mora talked to local reporters he had his game face on, and called Washington just another game. While that maybe Mora's public posture, as reported by seasoned Washington Huskies beat reporter Bob Condotta in the Seattle Times today, Mora has some special connections with the Huskies program.

Mora is "good friends with" UW athletic director Scott Woodward, who had offered Mora use of UW's training facilities when he hurt his knees for about six months in 2011. Then there is also this:

How invested was Mora in Washington? Well, he was a walk-on player at UW in some big years in the early 1980s. His dad Jim worked with and for Don James, which brought the families so close together the younger Mora was babysat by James' elder daughter Jill, and in turn, Jim later baby-sat the James' younger daughter, Jeni.

Mora's wife Shannon is a former UW cheerleader, and earlier this fall, when he hatched a surprise 50th birthday party for her, the site was downtown Seattle, not Los Angeles.

Okay then. Good thing is that Mora has such a supportive <s>buffoon of an</s> AD at UCLA (oh, wait).

Moving on to another storyline connecting UCLA and UW, Josh Shirley - the former UCLA signee who was dismissed from the UCLA football program as a result of allegations of on-campus theft - is now a backup DE for the Huskies. Shirley (along with Shaquille and Paul Richardson) was given the option by then UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel to attend a community college for a semester to get his act together and prove he was worthy of wearing the Blue and Gold before requesting reinstatement to UCLA. Instead he chose to run to Washington (while the Richardsons ran to Colorado and Arizona). In any event here were Sarkisian's comments on Shirley this week:

"We recruited Josh extremely hard coming out of high school, so I knew Josh, I knew his father, I knew the family," Sarkisian said. "Kids are going to make mistakes; I'm aware of that. I've got 105 sons between the ages of 18 and 22 years old, so we're not going to be perfect. So just like with anybody, when a kid makes a mistake, we try to assess the error in judgment and really try to identify, ‘Is that really who he is or is that out of character?' And I really felt the mistake Josh made at UCLA was out of character.

"So we brought him in. Part of the stipulation when we brought him in was we were going to redshirt him his freshman year, which he was probably good enough to play. And in that time, and all the way up till today, he's just been amazing. He's been a good student, he's been great in the community, he's been a good teammate. I couldn't ask for more than what he's brought."

Shirley, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior, is listed as the backup to sophomore Cory Littleton at UW's rush-end hybrid linebacker position. He's one of the pass-rushing specialists called upon in UW's "Jetsons" package.

That's all great. Bits it's still worth noting that while Neuheisel made the right decision in dismissing him and the Richardson cousins from the program, IMO UCLA should have never released those guys to other Pac-12 programs. It all goes back to the stupidity of Guerrero.

Now on the positive side, speaking of another player with connections to both Washington and UCLA, here were Sarkisian's comments on Myles Jack:

Myles had been very adamant that he wanted to play linebacker, and we were aware of that. We felt physically he could be a running back, but he was adamant about being a linebacker, and I think he'll continue to be. I don't foresee him getting 30 carries Friday night, but we'll see. He's a tremendous athlete on defense and at linebacker and on special teams, and obviously you see his talent at running back. Obviously, we recruited Myles hard - as hard as we could. It was choice that he made to go to UCLA; it's a good school, a good program, a good coach. Just like they have a player from Washington here, we've got quite a few good football players from L.A. that are on our team. Kids make the choices, they make ‘em in the best interests of what they think is best for them and their future and their family, and you put your roster together and go play. It is what it is.

Worked out well out for us. Elsewhere, here is UW's DC Justin Wilcox with some generic compliments about Hundley as dual-threat QB and Mazzone's offensive scheme.

Lastly, speaking of coordinators here are our guys after practice at Spaulding today. Here is Lou Spanos answering questions on Washington's offense, their outstanding RB Bishop Sankey, superstar TE and continued developments of numbers of his players including Jordan Zumwalt and Myles Jack. (thanks to BruinSportsReport.com for the videos):

Nothing earth shattering. And here is Noel Mazzone, who said Brett Hundley "looked sharp" today:

Mazzone was asked about the status of Jordon James but he didn't really have any definitive updates. I will let you interpret him by watching the video. Chime in the comment threads if you thought Mazzone said anything useful. No, I didn't write that to be critical. But sometimes I wonder what exactly are the use of these give and takes as they often don't result in anything beyond token sound bites. Discuss.

GO BRUINS.

News and notes from UCLA football practice as Bruins get ready for a huge special Friday night “black-out” game against Washington Huskies.

Hope everyone had a nice, long Veteran's Day weekend. UCLA has a short-game week this week, as the Bruins are getting ready for a "black-out" at the Rose Bowl (well at least the coaches, players and rest of us are) on Friday night. Coach Jim Mora met the reporters after practice today and had a very business like Q&A session with the beat reporters.

It's kind of interesting to watch Mora in this video. Normally he has been pretty jovial with the reporters all season, but today he was very stern and straightforward. He had his game-face on Monday:

Maybe Mora is a little extra fired-up this week as he is taking on his alma-mater (the school that passed him over to hire Steve Sarkisian). When he was asked about it at the end he dismissed it right away saying that "it was just another game" and that he "couldn't care less." Uh hum.

Mora also blasted the SPTRs for their putrid officiating job on Saturday night (they were atrocious even by SPTR standards). In response to a question about Anthony Barr not having any tackles on Saturday, Mora mentioned how our All American LB was tackled all game long and yet there was no call from the clueless refs, saying it was "shame" what Arizona "got away with it." To his credit when Barr was asked about it, he took responsibility for it (watch the full video on Inside UCLA):

"It's a number of things, but it starts with me," Barr said. "I put that on my shoulders. Should never go an entire 60 minutes, or however long we were out there on the field, without making a tackle.

"It starts with me. I've got to be better."

UCLA's defensive scheme, however, hasn't helped Barr put up big numbers. In recent weeks, the All-American linebacker has often shifted down and pass-rushed as a defensive end.

Barr also had nice things to say about Huskies' freakish TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins suggesting that he is a more polished version of Joe Fauria who is "lot more athletic," and "runs better routes." That matchup is going to fun to watch on Friday night.

Meanwhile, not surprisingly the reporters swarmed around Myles Jack after practice today. Here is the Pac-12 offensive player of the week talking about his huge break-out game on Saturday night (video via BruinSportsReport.com):

Jack apparently got something like 90 texts after the game on Saturday but there was a specific one that was special for obvious reasons.

Jack also had some interesting stories to share about his recruiting process and how some schools recruited him as a running back, while others recruited him as a LB. He talked about how it was a difficult decision to pick UCLA over Washington and Arizona State, and how Mora had a big impact in his final decisions.

Speaking of elite athletes picking UCLA over Washington, Brett Hundley fired off couple of questions to Jack in a funny back and forth at the end (guess he was listening in). It was pretty amusing. Hundley did talk to reporters today and among topics he discussed was his special connection with Shaq Evans, who he connected with for couple of big TDs on Saturday night.

Hundley was having a solid game through first half until the conservative playcalling kind of bottled him up and the offense in second half. Hopefully, the Bruins finally break out of that conservative shell and put together a complete performance this Friday night.

GO BRUINS.

LA Times college football analyst suggest Steve Sarkisian should be the leading candidate to replace Lane Kiffin at Southern Cal, and offers list of other intriguing names including the name of a seasoned NFL veteran who'd be a good fit for the Trojans.

It appears that the LA Times agrees with us and has anointed Steve Sarkisian as the leading candidate to replace Lane Kiffin at Southern Cal (we suggested Sarkisian should be in Pat Haden's Tier-1 list of candidates).

But here is a name put forward by LA Times we think is very intriguing:

Norv Turner, Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator. I laughed too until I checked his birth certificate and resume. Turner is actually Mike Riley with a much better record coaching the San Diego Chargers.

Like McKay and Robinson, Turner is from vintage Oregon stock. Turner spent nine years as a USC assistant, developed pro-style quarterbacks such as Troy Aikman and Philip Rivers and could probably be pried out of Cleveland. But he's probably too old at age 61 - just like Saban.

Makes a lot of sense.

Just looking out a little for our rivals because we want our last regular game of the season to mean something. Turner could be right guy to bring some stability and respectability in the beleaguered Trojan program in shambles.
