Four of the Bruins team leaders, Jake Brendel, Jordan Payton, Deon Hollins, and Paul Perkins, met with the media after workouts and meetings today and talked about, of all things, the Bruins quarterback and preparations for Virginia.

Monday is the day that Head Coach Jim Mora meets with the press. I sort of wish wish he had because there are a lot of questions that Bruin fans need answering. Now I fully realize the answer to every question today would be and should be "No comment. We are aware of the events and we are investigating the circumstances. We will issue a comment when it is appropriate".

So maybe there's no point in Mora speaking today, though it might be reassuring to some of the Bruin fan base to see the face of the program on a day when the program is trying to save some face.

Then again, maybe it was more appropriate that four senior leaders spoke after practice. U.C.L.A. elected its captains and they met the media after practice.

Center Jake Brendel was up first and seemed to have a great look of relief on his face about his reelection as a team captain. He got the obligatory Josh Rosen questions and noted that his role at center doesn't really change with by the replacement of the veteran Brett Hundley with the true freshman.

Jake missed last season's opener at Virginia when the Bruin offense put up an anemic 7 points against a tough and blitzing defense. Brendel spoke about the frustrations of watching that game from the sidelines.

Thanks to Ed Lewis and Bruin Sports Report for the videos today.

As much as I love Hundley, I think having a healthy Brendel over the ball offsets a true freshman QB this time around, and I expect the offense to be much more efficient and proficient, and far better prepared for what Virginia may do on Saturday compared to last year's opener.

The quarterback questions continued for Jordan Payton who said he'd like to take credit for Rosen getting the starting job by being his roommate in San Bernardino. He said all the usual right things about both Josh and Jerry but he kept coming back to Rosen's physical gifts and Payton seems sincerely excited about having that sort of arm in the pocket, which makes perfect sense coming from a receiver. He said he's excited for Rosen and that his "upside is incredible", and that his next steps are now just mental.

Payton also complimented Virginia's defense and coaching, particularly their sophomore safety Quin Blanding who led the FBS in tackles by a freshman in 2014 and was 12th overall in the country in that stat.

video courtesy Ed Lewis and BSRTV via YouTube

Deon Hollins broke down the Virginia quarterbacks Greyson Lambert and Matt Johns and discussed the need to be more fundamentally sound versus the Cavalier scheme this year, as opposed to last year's opener when Johns came on in relief of the starter Grayson and moved the team very effectively.

The linebacker was not exempt from Rosen questions and pointed out that Jerry is such a likable guy so there was a lot of sentiment in the locker room for him, but he noted how smart Rosen is already for a freshman and that he has worked to really get to know everyone on the team and they developed a comfort with him, too. Hollins added that the team has a lot of natural leaders and so there isn't the same weight on Rosen to be the guy on offense.

Deon said he thinks the Bruins are "absolutely" being overlooked this year. He got that feel at Pac-12 Media Day, but thinks the team works better that way and says it has given the team a blue collar mindset. Hollins himself is aiming for "probably about 12-13" sacks (I'll take the over) and he is really working on his mobility and pass coverage. He was also asked about Kenny Clark is "an absolute monster on the field" He doesn't just plug the middle but has a "non stop" motor and and Hollins compared him to a Clay Matthews type of player. (ooh, Deon, no trojan comparisons!)

The news of the day regarding Ishmael Adams must have hit between interviews because the media asked Paul Perkins about it and you can tell from his reaction that he knew nothing about it. It was big enough news to bump the mandatory QB questions to second billing, but then the QB questions came and Perk handled with the same smoothness he shows with the football, calling the competition a great battle and expressing trust in both Rosen and Jerry Neuheisel. Perkins thinks that with a freshman QB in the backfield, he'll get some more attention from opposing defenses this season, but he noted the offense has a lot of weapons and that Rosen is a good runner in his own right, so teams can't simply focus on him.

He complimented Virginia's defense as being big and fast and he admitted that the offense wasn't really prepared for Virginia's scheme last year. That is a telling statement, though I guess you can make some allowance for the first game of the year against an unfamiliar opponent. But after last year's obvious struggles, there shouldn't be many surprises the second time around.

Perkins was also asked about running against Kenny Clark in practice every day and he had high praise for the Bruins anchor on the defensive line.

I love that his first question about Ish is "Is he ok?" Let's hope so.

it will be a very interesting week as the Bruins continue preparations for the season opener with the Cavaliers this Saturday. The media just caught on to the issues surrounding Ish at the end of the interview session today and as we saw, the players weren't even aware of it. But that's going to be the talk around the team for the rest of the week and it has the potential to be a big distraction. It's really unfortunate on one level that the team will have this sort of mess heading into game one, but we realize that's only one facet of this affair. Let's see how the Bruins coaching staff keeps this team focused with everything going on this week.

Josh Rosen and Jerry Neuheisel discuss the quarterback position and the future, both Virginia and beyond.

There's a week and a half until U.C.L.A. Football kicks off the 2015 season. And after Wednesday, there's not much left to do except get ready for Virginia.

Josh Rosen met the media after practice on Thursday, a day after Jim Mora announced publicly that Rosen will be the Bruins starter to begin the season. The ageless and always impeccably dressed Jim Hill started the questions that the media has been waiting to officially ask for weeks and it was pretty predictable stuff. Rosen said he was excited to be named the starter, said he had confidence in his abilities throughout the process, thought his performance has been pretty good through camp so far, playing a similar scheme in high school was helpful, leading U.C.L.A. is the fulfillment of a dream, he will continue to focus on his development every day, his teammates haven't changed how they treat him, he recognizes the level of accountability as a student-athlete, and all the things you'd want to hear from someone in his position.

Overall, Rosen seemed humble and honest and said all the right things. Still, a couple things stood out.

Most impressively, Rosen said much of his success so far is due to Jerry Neuheisel because he is such a selfless guy and he has the team's best interest in mind and isn't out playing for himself.

He also downplayed the episode in SB when Mora called him out publicly on the field.

Coaches are coaches. They yell, they praise...I know 100% that Mora has my back through thick and thin, inside and outside UCLA, inside and outside football or anything, and I have complete trust in him and complete trust in this team.

Thanks to Tracy Pierson and Bruin Report Online for the video.

Rosen's appearance was followed by Jerry Neuheisel. Yeah, only a little bit awkward there. But still, a bit.

Jerry was exactly the same Jerry that we have rooted for since day one on campus. He was brutally honest with his feelings of disappointment at not being the starting QB at U.C.L.A. but played the role of perfect teammate, saying his personal feelings were secondary to the good of the team and that anyone else on the team would have been just as supportive.

He [Mora] said he just had a gut feeling and as a player you got to respect it. You don't have to agree with it, but you have to respect it. What the head coach wants, the head coach gets, and it's our job to make sure we go get him a W every Saturday.

He did note that he spoke to his dad, who happened to end up being a backup during his senior year himself, but still ended up contributing to the success of that team in a big way. Jerry has one class left to get his diploma, but didn't hint at considering becoming a graduate transfer so he could play elsewhere.

He says the biggest area he can help Josh is with learning and recognizing coverages. As a freshman, Josh hasn't seen as many as he has and he'll help him get accustomed to what he'll see at this level.

Jerry also said he thought that coaching would be a great future. Listen to that part at 3:50.

Does anyone else think Jerry would make a fantastic quarterback coach?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

The Bruins have taken over the IM Fields for two a days as they start to prepare for the season opener against Virginia.

U.C.L.A. Football has returned to Westwood and two a days on campus. The Bruins focused on situational drills in the morning and had another practice this evening. Even though the team is back at home, they are still practicing in an unfamiliar setting, the IM Field.

It's a neat setting because you can see the campus. We've got 2 100 yards fields with tons of space, so we're getting used to that. We appreciate the fact that U.C.L.A. lets us use the IM Fields, U.C.L.A. Rec, because this is a big commitment by them and it helps us.

We have to get used to all the lines on the field.

Right. Those are called "40 yard lines". Weird, I know.

The IM Field is now covered with field turf, but they still have 60 yards of grass on Spaulding they will use prepare when they are playing on grass fields and the kickers will primarily be using that surface.

Mora went on to say they will start some early preparations for Virginia tomorrow, but he has not made any decisions on quarterbacks and there have not been any discussions with players or staff and furthermore he would not put a timeline on it. While it seems that it would be best to get the starter maximum reps before the opener, it does't sound like the staff is either prepared to name a starter, or perhaps the starter isn't yet prepared to be one. Either way, after saying at the start of San Bernardino that they hoped to start narrowing down reps after 4 or 5 practices, this could be seen as a concerning (absence of) development.

Mora said he was pleased with the progress that freshman TE Chris Clark has made as he recovers from mono. He was in full pads yesterday and is starting to get some reps.

Mora was asked about Simon Goines' outlook this year and said it is "uncertain at this time". Personally, I read that as a very bad sign for him. He has never really gotten right following his knee injuries, and it doesn't look like there is much light ahead any time soon. It also really thins out the depth at tackle.

On the good side, Jake Brendel and Conor McDermott both practiced today which is good news of the offense. Even better, the Offensive Line is "no longer a concern" to Chris Foster with the LAT. Foster is of course known for his history of being overly positive and enthusiastic about the Bruins future. Well, maybe not always. But Jerry Neu has always kept his head up, and he is pretty positive about the line, too.

"It's the best I have ever been around," junior quarterback Jerry Neuheisel, who has spent the last 3 1/2 years in the program, said of the line. "We have had a lot of moving parts over the years. To have a corps of guys who have game experience, as a quarterback, that's very comforting."

Said tackle Caleb Benenoch: "We've developed into a physical, physical, very talented group. Coach Klemm has helped us reach our potential. A lot guys go to college and they don't reach their potential."

I want this to be the case, but considering pass protection and penalties, there is still plenty of room for growth in potential, and hopefully we'll see that on the field in the coming Saturdays. Recruiting has definitely improved the depth in the unit as well as getting some players back from injury.

UCLA gave up 40 sacks last season, but that problem dissipated when McDermott took over at left tackle. UCLA gave up 25 sacks in the first six games and 15 in seven games after McDermott was inserted into the lineup.

Thanks to Ed Lewis and Bruin Sports Report for the videos after this morning's practice.

Adarius Pickett has been getting a lot of notice for his play in the secondary through preseason camp. He credited his preparation during the summer with Coach Alosi as well as with teammates for getting him well prepared for San Bernardino. He still considers himself a safety even though the staff had him take a few reps at running back during the last two weeks and doesn't seem to anticipate any real time with the offense.

Freshman Defensive End Rick Wade has also been getting good reviews. He's put on about 20 pounds in the off season and is up to about 255 now, and he feels stronger and more flexible and hopes that will help him get some playing time this year. He noted that Takkarist McKinley had a bit of a head injury and that he and Jacob Tuioti-Mariner were in line to get in the rotation.

Foster had some other important notes today, including:

Running back Steven Manfro, who had minor surgery on his right knee two weeks ago, was back at practice Tuesday but was limited to individual drills. He is expected to be available for contact drills next week.

Defensive end Takkarist McKinley, out nearly a week because of a concussion, was allowed to return to contact drills.

Running back Craig Lee rejoined the Bruins Tuesday after finishing a summer class.

It's great to see these three back on the field. Congrats to Lee for getting the books in order. The running back roster is already deep and talented, and Lee's return will bolster that further.

There was no practice today, but Bruin fans had a wonderful morning meeting their 2015 football team before the buses headed west. Check out some of our photos here.

When I heard there would be no practice today, I had pretty much decided to sleep in and skip Fan Appreciation Day. Two of my wonderful friends were going though, so I decided to join them.

We had a wonderful time, and I thought it would be a great time to collect some photos of the players for Bruinette88 and her quizzes!

The players were wonderful as usual and took their time with each fan that spoke with them. I overheard Jerry Neuheisel asking a young man what position he wanted to play. The future Bruin responded something like any, to which Neu responded, that's a real football player.

I skipped taking a photo of Myles Jack because he was difficult to get of shot of in the middle of the storm of people that surrounded him. But we all know what he looks like! His mom was there with Myles' beautiful puppy. I'm not quite sure I didn't get a picture of the puppy, but maybe it was for the best. We don't want other teams knowing what Myles' pup looks like.

There were also free posters, really good brats for breakfast, and new Bruin gear - including this t-shirt which I just couldn't resist:

In case you're wondering what the team did when they left camp, we overheard one player saying to another: "Don't eat another hot dog, we're going to the Mora's". I guess it was player appreciation day too!

ESPN has a few videos discussing UCLA. This first one features Craig Haubert and Tom Luginbill discussing Soso Jamabo's impact on the team this year, but Luginbill comes off looking like an idiot because it sounds like he is basing his opinion off the prom night incident.

UCLA conducted its final two-a-day in San Bernardino, with an early morning practice and a 5:00 p.m. scrimmage

UCLA conducted its last two-a-day of Fall Camp at Cal State University, San Bernardino, in anticipation of tomorrow's Fan Appreciation Day at 9 a.m. UCLA will NOT practice tomorrow. According to L.A. Times beat writer, Chris Foster, UCLA held a detail oriented practice this morning, with no hitting, with an eye towards this evening's blue vs. white scrimmage.

#UCLA had a heavy detailed workout this morning, with no hitting, in preparation for tonight's scrimmage @UCLAFootball #pac12

After the morning practice, sophomore, Matt Dickerson, was interviewed, courtesy of Ed Lewis and Bruin Sports Report:

Dickerson talks about his reps with the first string as well as Coach Angus McClure's emphasis on each defensive lineman learning all of the positions on the D line. I expect big things from Matt this season.

Perhaps the major story out of Fall Camp in San Berdoo is that Head Coach, Jim L. Mora, and his staff have not yet named a starter at quarterback, with kickoff vs. the University of Virginia Cavaliers at the Rose Bowl only two weeks away (we are getting so close I can taste it!). The writing might have been on the wall regarding the lack of a decision after Coach Mora's tirade with respect to Josh Rosen at the end of Wednesday's practice.

So, the decision will be made after the Bruins return to Westwood. I would imagine that it will need to be made by next weekend, at least privately, before UCLA closes practices and starts game planning for Virginia the following week. Coach Mora confirms this time frame in the video below.

Orange County Register beat writer, Joey Kaufman, has some insight from Coach Mora at to his thought process:

Mora: "We want to make sure that when we do make it, it’s the right decision, that we have conviction about it, that we can stick with it."

— Joey Kaufman (@joeyrkaufman) August 22, 2015

According to Kaufman, the coaching staff wants to be absolutely sure of its decision before it is made. Makes sense to me.

As far as tonight's scrimmage goes, the blue team beat the white team, 39-16. This was not surprising, as Josh Rosen and Jerry Neuheisel took all of the snaps for the blue team. Mike Fafaul took all of the snaps for the white team. Frankly Little Neu outperformed Rosen. Both threw touchdown passes, but Jerry did not turn the ball over, while Josh threw an interception and fumbled the ball twice. Josh also had a rushing touchdown. The plots thickens with respect to the quarterback race.

As a side note, defensive back, Adarius Pickett, got some reps at running back and wide receiver, Mossi Johnson, got some reps at DB, as confirmed by Coach Mora in the video below. It will be interesting to see if this was just for kicks and grins, or if either player will get any looks at those positions in regular season game action.

Big ups to ckphresh5289 for his play-by-play Fanpost about today's scrimmage. if you want to read about it in great detail, check out ckphresh5289's Fanpost. Thank you again, ckphresh5289, great stuff!!

@UCLAFootball has some outstanding photos from the scrimmage here. I particularly like the one of Roosevelt Davis (#22 in white) breaking away from Aaron Wallace (#51 in blue) and the one of the fingertip stretch by Tyler Scott (#81 in blue). Hope Tyler caught that one!

In closing, Coach Mora was interviewed after the scrimmage tonight. He talks about how important it was for the players to be able to "cut loose and play football" during the scrimmage. He relayed some great news as well: no injuries were sustained during the scrimmage. Outstanding! Again, thank you to Ed Lewis and Bruin Sports Report for the video:

Finally, Coach Mora confirmed that there will be no practice tomorrow, just the Fan Appreciation Event. I hope that you SoCal Bruins can make it out to San Berdoo to meet and honor our beloved Bruins.

That's it for your Day 11 Spaulding Report. Go Bruins!!!

Assistant Coach Adrian Klemm missed all of Spring Practice and the spring recruiting season after being suspended earlier this year. This additional suspension is in addition to the previous suspension for the same matter.

UCLA announced additional self-imposed sanctions late this afternoon five months after self-reporting alleged NCAA rules violations involving UCLA Assistant Coach Adrian Klemm.

Klemm, who was suspended with pay for all of Spring Practice and the spring recruiting season, will be suspended for the first two games of the 2015 season. He has also been fined an undisclosed sum.

Additionally, UCLA Football reduced its recruiting days this past spring by 10 percent and will reduce official visits by two next year.

A Look at the Latest News in the World of UCLA Athletics While UCLA Football Continues Fall Camp on Day 11 in San Berdoo.

Good morning Bruin fans. Here is your daily Bruin briefing.

Stipends

2015-2016 will be the first year when Division 1 schools can provide stipends to their players. USA Today published their survey of schools and Utah and UCLA have budgeted the most money in the Pac-12, $1 million, for the 2015-2016 academic year. Well, that's not exactly true. As Joey Kaufman points out "Stanford and USC did not disclose figures, as they are private schools". UCLA players will receive a $5,500 stipend this school year. Kaufman explains:

The amount is largely based on whether health insurance is included and if a player is living on campus or off campus. Division I schools can provide additional scholarship aid to players for food, travel and miscellaneous living expenses. The amount they can give to their athletes is set by their respective financial aid offices, who then report the COA figures to the federal government in order to calculate student financial aid.

Any guesses on how much the players at those other two schools will be getting?

Basketball

Unfortunately, Kevon Looney will be out four to six months after undergoing surgery on his right hip. According to Fox Sports, Kevon had surgery to repair a torn labrum yesterday, and is expected to make a full recovery. Warrior GM and Bruin Bob Myers said he felt it was best to address the issues now. I think Kevon is in good hands with Meyers overseeing his young career. I hope Looney's rehabilitation gets him back on the court soon and better than new. It will be fun watching him play with that Golden State offense!

Football Camp

First, don't forget that tonight at 5 pm in San Bernardino, the Bruins will hold a scrimmage and will stay around afterwards to sign autographs and take pictures.

You can find some great practice photos from UCLA Athletics and their latest film highlighting the talented and deep receiving corps which has been going up against a talented and deep secondary:

Ryan Hollins explains why the UCLA Bruin own this town (and why the Lakers are a playoff team). Oh well - 1 out of 2 isn't bad, He also talks about Josh Rosen, Coach Mora and other football related things as he spends the morning with Max & Marcellus.

A huge thanks to Bruin'96 for finding this explanation of what Jim Mora's tongue lashing means for Josh Rosen. Chris Foster tells us that the Bruin receivers are wary of the competition - from their own teammates, and Matthew Joye of the Daily Bruin reports that Mora was really riding the offense hard at practice yesterday.

Soccer Kicks

UCLA Athletics and Bruin Films are putting together a new series, The Life. In the first episode they take an inside look at the life of UCLA women’s soccer player Gabbi Miranda:

Physics and Dark Energy

UCLA physicist, Paul Hamilton, is testing theories of dark energy by mimicking the vacuum of space. I was just thinking that there must be some application for this type of energy which "causes galaxies to accelerate away from one another" for the football team. Thoughts? Ideas?

Fan Appreciation

Don't forget that Fan Appreciation Day has been rescheduled for Saturday at 9 am in San Bernardino with food provided by Stater Bros. Actually, the food looks pretty good:

Stater Bros. is planning for 2,000 attendance and will serve brats, chips and soft drinks while supplies last.

Today there will be a practice in the morning (8:30 am) and a scrimmage this evening (5 pm). I imagine many of you will get out there for the scrimmage (which will be followed by autograph and photo opportunities) and we invite you to share your observations in a fanpost or in a thread. This is your thread for day 11.

Enjoy, and as always...

Go Bruins!
