The Bruins dropped out of both polls following yesterday's loss, but the College Football Playoff picture may be a little clearer.

In case you weren't quite sure UCLA has again dropped out of the Top 25 following yesterday's loss to Southern Cal.

With just the conference championships and the Army-Navy game left to play, here is where the polls stand. Clemson and Alabama remain 1-2 in both polls while Notre Dame's loss to Stanford has allowed the Oklahoma Sooners to move into the top 4.

Given that Iowa will play Michigan State for a playoff spot in the Big Ten Championship Game and Ohio State is done for the regular season, Stanford could have an opportunity to move into the CFP if Clemson or Alabama falter in their conference championship games, although if Clemson loses to North Carolina, the #8 Tar Heels could move into the playoff picture instead of the Cardinal.

It certainly looks like both Notre Dame and Florida State are out at this point as neither team will be playing for a conference title.

Elsewhere in the Pac-12, Oregon moved up to #15 and #16 while Utah comes in at #21 and #20. Southern Cal re-enters the polls today at #24 in both while Washington State also dropped out after losing to Washington.

Here are the results from each poll:

U.C.L.A. had one game to win the Pac-12 South and get a chance to win the conference title and play in a major bowl game. The only thing different this year? The annual loss came against the worst team possible.

Failure isn't fatal. But failure to change might be. - John Wooden

Here's what I wrote the morning after the loss to Utah last year.

Line wins games.

Just ask <strike>Utah</strike> Southern Cal.

Oh, and ask our O Line coach, while you're at it. And maybe our DC, too. And definitely the Head Coach. See what they have to say about last night's game.

[disappointing losses, failures by DC and OC and other coaches to game plan or adjust, blah blah, blah...]

And if I'm pointing fingers at the defensive coordinator and the offensive coordinator and the offensive line coach and the kicking coach (if we even have one), then there has to be a giant arrow at the head coach. These assistants are his picks. Their failure or success reflects on him, and they reflected very very poorly last night. For the OC, it's a recurring story. For the O Line coach, it's becoming clear that this is a coaching problem. For all of his incredible recruiting successes, there is very little improvement along his OL on game day. And while this is our DC's first year in the role, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to change his personnel and formation to counter what the offense is doing, especially when it is doing the same thing over and over.

There is no doubt our U.C.L.A. football program is better under Coach Mora than it was under the previous coaches. He certainly appears to be a good man and a good role model for our student athletes, and the culture around the program is better than it has been in years.

But it isn't clear that Mora and his coaching staff are good enough for this program to be elite.

<strike>Last night</strike> Yesterday afternoon, I saw one team play with desperation and intensity for 60 minutes, one team consistently break tackles and fight for extra yards, one team make tackles at the line of scrimmage, one team consistently pressure the opponent, one team have a game plan that specifically exploited the weaknesses of the opponent, one team that made early and dramatic adjustments when things weren't working, one team that clearly had its players better prepared, better motivated, and better coached.

That team was <strike>Utah</strike> Southern Cal.

...

I have to amend my line.

Line wins games. And so do coaches.

Sigh.

I have to be honest. I've come to really hate writing this article.

One reason is the difficulty of squeezing it in after a game and before whatever early start Sunday morning has going. Even with the early kickoff yesterday, after that disaster was done, I left to go to my kid's hockey game and got home about 9:30 pm, and now I'm banging away at the keyboard because we just got up at 5:30 am for his next game this morning. There were a lot of short nights again this season.

Some of it is just my own sorrow for all the anguish in the fanbase. People I know in person, or know through the email or Facebook, or just know by their screen names here on Bruins Nation, are all saddened and frustrated and angry about the game and the state of the program. Knowing that we all really have the same ideals at heart, even if we have different ideas how to achieve them, even more than for me personally I want my Bruin family to be happy and joyful as we follow our teams together, and it sucks to see everyone so let down.

Some of it is that my computer has something screwy going on with this particular site, like it's abusing the CPU and turning my cursor into the dreaded spinning color wheel of death. If I'm lucky, I can close Safari and reopen and start fresh. If I'm unlucky (and I have no idea the difference) it's a manual reboot. I need someone with some CS skills to help me out with this sometime, because I spend quite a lot of time on this site and it's driving me nuts.

And some of it is that it's just getting hard to not write the same damn thing week after week. I mean, the football team keeps doing the same thing, and it's really hard to try to find something different or insightful or even interesting to say about it.

But since the team keeps doing the same thing, why can't I? See that Utah article? I don't even have to write anything new. Just change out the opponent, maybe alter the date, add a current picture, Boom. It's uncanny.

Plus, I think this year's Colorado article reads a lot like this. And last year's Stanford article. And the ASU article from 2 years ago. Plenty of other mornings after over the last 3 years have elements of the same theme running through them. And nothing is changing.

And that's the problem right there.

What you see with this staff right now is what you get. A solid recruiting class and renewed reasons for hope and expectations, followed by a season with 8-9 wins with 3-4 unnecessary losses, a close run at the division title but a final collapse with everything on the line, and another season of opportunity lost. How many times have we seen Jim Mora and his team get to this point and then look like they don't belong?

Wash, rinse, repeat. Times three.

Is that good enough for you, Bruins? Because if it's not, then something needs to change.

There are already plenty of suggestions in the post game thread. Some hawks are pushing for the full nuclear option, which sort of like like its real world analogy might have some merits in principle, but also brings a lot of practical messes which makes it a very very risky move, not the least of which is whether anyone trusts the guy holding the launch keys in Morgan Center to use them wisely. Some on the other end are saying that next year will be better when players are healthy and some of this year's key players will have another year of experience and the only thing that needs to change is time and luck, though I think the last four years should suggest why that route doesn't seem so promising either. Others have various permutations in mind and are looking for specific upgrades at certain spots where we have had a consistent pattern of underachievement, but picking which spots and how much underachievement in coaching vs recruiting to balance is tricky.

The next few weeks will be very interesting to watch because Jim Mora is at a crossroads. Beating a Southern Cal team that was undermanned by the mean old NCAA is one thing but he will now realize that losing to an interim coach and a bunch of third stringers and freshman talent that he couldn't recruit to Westwood will burn up any remaining good will from his first three years. Staying loyal to his friends and coaching staff might be a pleasant character trait but it isn't a good head coaching trait and the anchors on his staff will sink him the way they have sunk this team repeatedly. If Mora wants to retain the faith of the fanbase, he'll need to give them something tangible to make them believe that 2016 isn't going to be a repeat of 2015. Or 2014. Or 2013. Or Rick Neuheisel's last game. Remember that one? A blowout loss to Southern Cal? That game got something to change.

Something has to change next year. Maybe it'll be the writer on Sunday mornings.

Of course, one thing has already changed for next year. We'll have a losing streak against $c game when we play them.

No amount of coachspeak can sooth the wounds of Bruin fans this evening.

Normally, in this space, I'll take the time to watch and re-watch and transcribe some of what at least the coaches have to say after a game.

Frankly, tonight, unless Jim Mora fired some of his assistants (he didn't) or Noel Mazzone announced he was leaving the program (he didn't either), I'm not all that interested in what they have to say.

I don't want to listen to the coachspeak trying to explain what happened because most of these interviews today are going to sound just like this one.

But, despite that, I realize that some of you might actually want to watch them. So, I'm posting them. I'm just not going to comment on any of them.

It's not a "revolution" when you do the same things over and over and over again. That is the definition of insanity, not revolution.

I am here to declare that the Jim Mora's "Bruin Revolution" is officially over after being televised.

Why is it over? Because, while Mora and his coaching staff may have disrupted the status quo of the combined Dorrell-Neuheisel eras, nothing continues to change under Jim Mora. If it did, Mora would be making staff changes immediately.

To be sure, four years is, in fact, plenty of time to turn a program around. Just ask the fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Michigan Wolverines (today's loss to Ohio State not withstanding) or the University of Florida Gators. Each of those programs saw a quick and dramatic turnaround with each of their current coaches. For good measure throw in the Florida State Seminoles and the UNC Tar Heels.

What do each and every one of these teams have in common? They are ALL public universities which have either turned around their programs in less time than Jim Mora has been at UCLA or, in the case of North Carolina, have the program making progress instead of regressing over the same four year period.

Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, Jim McElwain, Jimbo Fisher and Larry Fedora can each claim to have brought a successful "revolution" to their schools compared to the previous regime.

The only way that anyone can say that Jim Mora has brought a truly successful "revolution" to the UCLA football program is to accept the fact the current state of the program is the best we can get while ignoring the successes these other coaches have had at their respective schools.

To answer the question as to whether the current state of the program is the best Bruin fans can possibly hope for, let's look to Coach Wooden.

As we all know, Coach Wooden defined success like this:

Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.

Considering the talent level which Coach Mora has been recruiting and Coach Wooden's definition of success, I don't think anyone can rightfully claim that our football program is a success at this point.

Like every one of you, I'm quite disgusted by the display our football team put on today.

After four years of watching this team regress, I am at a point where I just don't think anything will change. I do not think that Jim Mora will take the necessary look in the mirror at his coaching staff and determine that changes need to be made to his staff.

I don't think that he will replace Noel Mazzone, Taylor Mazzone, Adrian Klemm or anyone else, for that matter. Why won't he do this? Simple: For all the talk about "revolution," Mora does not appear to be a coach who holds his assistants accountable. If he were, it wouldn't have taken four months from the Oregon incident to replace Jeff Ulbrich as defensive coordinator. If he were, Ulbrich would have been fired before he "chose to leave."

If he were that type of coach, it would be announced on Monday that Noel Mazzone, Taylor Mazzone and Adrian Klemm have been relieved of their duties on the Bruin coaching staff. Making these changes should be the bare minimum acceptable to retain his job for next season.

Given that Mora isn't as "revolutionary" as he claims, let's move up the ladder to UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. It appears that Dan Guerrero is content with the so-called "progress" the football program has made to a point where he probably will not consider making a coaching change at this time. He doesn't realize that the program has already stagnated and that the "Bruin Revolution" is over and that the team has spent the past three years regressing.

Moving on to the Guerrero's supervisor, Gene Block is content that Guerrero is a "strong financial manager" and will certainly not consider replacing Guerrero as Athletic Director. The best that one can hope for here is that either Gene Block is replaced by a Chancellor who understands the important role athletics plays at a university like UCLA.

Alternatively, Guerrero's contract currently goes until 2019. Guerrero will likely have to retire at that point under the mandatory retirement age of the University of California. That's four more long years. Ouch.

Accepting the fact that Guerrero isn't going away anytime soon, if Guerrero did fire Mora, Dan would be responsible for the subsequent coaching search. After Dorrell, Neuheisel, Mora and Alford, I don't know of a Bruin fan in his right mind who would trust Dan Guerrero with another coaching search for a major revenue program.

But, assuming that Guerrero have the guts to make a coaching change, it pretty much means that any Bruin fan who wants Mora gone tomorrow needs to hope that the Raiders, the Chargers or the Rams decide to replace their current coaches. That would allow Mora to accept a job coaching with one of the NFL teams which appear to be heading to LA.

That, my friends, is really the best hope we have at this point of bringing in someone else to run the program as of today.

Of course, every Bruin season ticket holder who hasn't already renewed their tickets for next season does have an opportunity to vote with the dollars between now and Monday.

It is certainly possible that today's game and, in fact, this entire season could influence fans who may have been already on the fence about renewing their tickets due to the large increases demanded for the thousands of tickets in sections where no donation has been required until now.

But I'm not sure that even a Bruin Season Ticket Holder Revolution would ultimately send enough of a message that we are tired of being sold a goal year after year that we continuously fall short on.

And, we are relegated to nothing but insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

It is time for a change, Bruin fans. I'm personally willing to give Mora a pass if he will acknowledge that he needs to make significant and substantial changes to his offensive coaching staff. If he isn't willing to do that, then he needs to go. And, he can go to the NFL, Texas, or even USC for all that I care (although I wouldn't consider hiring him after today if I were Pat Haden). I don't really care where he goes as long as he goes away if he won't make the changes necessary to continue his "Bruin Revolution" because, right now, the revolution is dead. All that we have is Bruin Insanity and I'm tired of that.

Go Bruins.

Bruins drop the ball, lose the game.

The conventional wisdom before the game was that the Trogan pass defense was vulnerable, while the Bruin run defense was our weak point. But any fan of this team knows that the more something makes sense, the less likely we are to do it. What could we really expect out of this game? A win? Not so certain for the first time in the the Mora era. There was also the notion that Mora's teams tend to follow 'big' wins with unimpressive performances. A habit that has often led to losses.

That being said, Bruin fans had reason to be optimistic after the win in Utah. We had managed to cut out the drive killing penalties, and our defense had toughened up and stopped the Utes run game. And yet, it being Rivalry Week, you could take nothing for granted, and any honest Bruin knew it was going to be a tough fight in South Central.

1st Quarter

Game began with a little chippiness on the part of the Troylets during the kickoff return. They then went nowhere, amassing -1 yard on 3 downs before punting it away. The Bruins then came out and returned the favor, going 3 yards on 3 plays before punting it 40 yards. Trogan ball. The Troylets started the drive with 5 straight runs, looking to exploit our run defense. They would manage an efficient 60 yards on 11 mostly run plays, before being stopped on the 12 and forced to punt. A little more chippiness on the part of the troylets on the kick off coverage; Bruins start on the 35 thanks to the face mask penalty on the Trogans. Bruins promptly cross the 50 but got stuffed on a 3rd and 1. Mora called for the punt, and Mengel kicked a beaut, putting the Troylets on the 2 yard line. They would put up 7 yards on 3 plays before punting the ball. Bruin ball. The drive began with a 11 yard Rosen pass to Fuller. After 33 yards on 5 plays, the Bruins failed to convert a pass to the end zone making it 4th and 1. Mora kept the offense on the field and handed it off to Paul Perkins. A 19 yard run later, the Bruins were on the board. Score: 7 - 3 Bruins. Trogans got the ball back on the 14 and would only manage 4 yards on 3 plays before forced to punt by a stiff Bruin defense. UCLA got the ball back on the 41 and promptly handed it off to Nate Starks. Three straight run plays and 8 yards later, we were back in punt formation. Southern Cal began their next possession on the 15. Two snaps later the quarter came to an end. Score: 7 -3 Bruins.

2nd Quarter

Trogans picked up where they left off with a 7 yard run for a 1st down. They followed that with a 34 yard bomb to Smith-Schuster. 3 plays later they were going for it on 4th and 1 on the 3 yard line. A 2 yard run later, they were at 1st and Goal. A Cody Kessler keep later, the Trogans scored again. 85 yards on 10 plays. The Bruins got the ball on the 24, and naturally handed it off to Perkins but he got stuffed. Rosen then found Thomas Duarte for 27 yards. The refs would manage to screw up the down and distance at one point. When the smoke had cleared, Rosen found Duarte in the endzone for a 19 yard TD. 76 yards on 8 plays. Score: 14 - 10 Bruins. The Troylets returned the ball to the 20 yard line. They then moved the ball efficiently going 76 yards on 15 plays including converting a 4th and 1. Ultimately the Bruin defense held and the Trogans were forced to kick a field goal. Score 14 - 13 Bruins. The Bruins began on the 23 then everything fell apart. We managed -14 yards on 3 plays after a Rosen sack. Then, on the punt we gave up a 42 yard Adoree Jackson return for a TD. /Awesome. We got the ball back on the 26 and got back to work. But perhaps still thinking of that punt return, we could only manage 3 yards on 3 plays before punting the ball right back. The Trogans began on the 32 and the offense took the field once more. The Bruins defense played with a purpose, however, and held the Trogans to 14 yards on 4 plays before punting once more. Running out of time, the Bruin's offense took the field once more but did not show the urgency needed to get the ball into field goal range, going 44 yards on 3 plays before time ran out on the 1st half. Score 20 - 14 Trogans.

3rd Quarter

The Bruins started the 2nd half by returning the ball to the 35 yard line. The offense came out and sputtered right away going only 6 yards on 3 plays before punting again. The Trogans began on their 16. The Bruin's defense rose to the occasion and held the Trojies to 5 yards on 3 plays and almost sacked Kessler. The Troylets would punt and give us the ball on the 22. UCLA's offense got back to work and moved the ball efficiently enough to force the Troylets to fake an injury to give them time to catch their breath. I would not work, the Bruins would cap off a 78 yard drive on 11 plays with a Perkins 1 yard run for a Touchdown. Score: 21-20 Bruins. Troylets began their next drive by kneeling on a touchback in the endzone. The Trogan's offense came back out and served Kessler up for a couple big hits, ultimately going -8 yards on 3 plays before punting. Momentum was clearly on our side. But, on the next Bruin possession, our pass protection broke down and Rosen fumbled as he was hit by Claude Pelon who would scoop the ball up and take it to the house for a TD. Score: 26 - 21 Trogans. The Bruins' offense came back out looking for redemption, and managed only 33 yards on 5 lays before Rosen threw an interception that was returned to the USC 48 yard line. The Trogan offense came back out, and battled for every one of 52 yards on 8 plays including the final 20 yard stretched out TD catch. Score: 33 - 21 Trogans. The Bruin offense came back out and Perkins got things started with a 31 yard run to the 45. UCLA would go 57 ards on 6 plays before being stopped. Kaimi was brought out or a 47 yard FG which went left. And that ended the 3rd quarter. Score 33-21 Trogans.

4th Quarter

The Trogan offense came back out and managed only 4 yards on 3 plays before punting. The UCLA offense came back out and managed -6 yards on 3 plays including an illegal forward lateral that ended the possession. The Troylet's offense took the field once more and moved methodically, going 68 yards on 11 plays and chewing up 6:46. The Bruins' offense came back out and was moving the ball well before Josh Rosen's 3rd turnover ended the drive. 32 yards on 3 plays. Ball was intercepted by Iman Marshall then fumbled, then recovered. The Trogan's offense took the field in high spirits with intent to run out the clock. It was not long before the Trogans called for the victory formation and run out the clock.

Wrap up

As gut wrenching as this game was to watch, the truth is we played well enough to win. Three plays in particular killed us: the Punt return for a TD, the fumble scoop for a TD, and the INT that ultimately set up their 3rd quarter touchdown. Two of those were gifts from the football gods. And, it's hard to win when you give up 13 points. (They would attempt a 2 point conversion and fail.) Outside of those miscues, the defense played well and at times was our only hope for winning this game.

The game was realistically lost in the 3rd quarter. After the two gimmes, our offense began to play uncharacteristically which led to further miscues like the Rosen attempt to avoid a sack by lateraling it as he went down. That possession was already ended, but the penalty did not help with field position. Later Josh made a bad read and threw it behind Payton which resulted in yet another interception. This was a result of 'trying to hard' and that's what happens when you play from behind.

Congratulations to the USC Trojans. They took care of the ball and made the most out of our mistakes. That's a winning combination in any contest.

A berth in the Pac-12 Championship game is on the line this afternoon when the Bruins face the Trojans.

Today isn't just gameday, Bruin fans. It's bigger than that.

It's the annual Battle of LA.

It pits neighbor versus neighbor and, sometimes, one family member against another. It's the Battle for the Victory Bell.

It's the Crosstown Showdown, UCLA vs. USC for the Pac-12 South. The winner goes to the Pac-12 Championship Game next Saturday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara and the loser goes to a third tier bowl game.

Whether you're at the game or at home watching on TV, it doesn't change the fact that you need to tell anyone wearing ketchup and mustard today to "Take off that red shirt!"

It's a game that causes coaches to be fired. Or, in the case of the Trojans lately, it causes interim coaches to not earn the job permanently.

Personally, I think Brett Hundley said it best. "We Own This Town."

And, it's time for the Bruins to step up again and prove that fact. This is your UCLA vs. USC First Half Open Thread.

Let's conclude our preview of today's UCLA vs. USC game by looking at the Trojan coaching staff and special teams while also discussing the keys to the game for the Bruins.

The one thing which has been constant in this rivalry during the Jim Mora era has been change, the change of USC head coaches, that is. The Bruins will go up against the fourth Trojan coach in four years today as interim USC head coach Clay Helton tries to make his case to keep the job permanently.

Of course, this is Helton's second stint as interim coach of the Trojans. He took over as interim coach following the resignation of interim coach Ed Orgeron who took over after Lane Kiffin was fired and left on the tarmac at LAX in 2013.

In addition to serving as interim head coach, Helton is still the Trojans offensive coordinator.

But, perhaps, the biggest liability to Helton's hopes is his offensive line coach. Now, because Helton is the interim head coach, calling Bob Connolly Helton's offensive line coach may be a bit of a misnomer since Helton isn't responsible for hiring him. But, in February, I wrote that I would be shocked if USC's offensive line were one of the tops in college football this season. Sure enough, the Trojans are ranked 102nd in the nation in tackles for loss allowed and 103rd in sacks allowed. They are also only ranked 64th in the nation in rushing offense. These stats would seem to indicate that the Trojans' line is not up to par. As gbruin is fond of writing: Line wins games.

Justin Wilcox is in his second season as the USC Defensive Coordinator. The hallmark of the Trojans' defense this season has been their ability to stop the run. They are ranked 34th in rushing defense. At the same time, they have allowed the 22nd most passing yards in college football. That makes some sense when you consider the fact that the Trojans' defensive line and one of the inside linebackers are seniors while the secondary and other linebackers are all underclassmen.

Special Teams

Turning to special teams, redshirt junior Alex Wood is the USC placekicker. Wood has made 10 of 14 field goals attempts and has missed 3 attempts from between 30 and 39 yards. His season long is only 43 yards. So, look for the Trojans to potentially go for it if a field goal would be greater than 30 yards.

Redshirt senior Kris Albarado will handle the punting duties for the Trojans. While Albarado's yards per punt is 41.4, only three of his punts have been touchbacks while 22 have been fair catches. This should allow UCLA to try to gain some yards whenever USC punts.

Adoree Jackson is USC's punt returner and primary kickoff returner. Jackson is averaging 9.7 return yards per punt with one touchdown and he is averaging 23.9 return yards per kickoff. Junior Justin Davis is the Trojan with the most kickoff returns behind Jackson. He is averaging 24.3 return yards per kickoff on six returns. The Bruin punting team will need to make sure they contain Jackson and keep him from taking one to the house.

Keys To The Game

1. Get to the QB: The Bruins need to attack on defense and put Cody Kessler on the ground. They should be able to do this considering that Trojans have given up 30 sacks through their first 11 games.

2. Attack the Trojan secondary: Josh Rosen needs to exploit the Trojans' weak pass defense.

3. Take some risks on fourth down: Let's face it. The Bruins' punting game is weak. Adoree Jackson is dangerous. If the Bruins are around midfield, Jim Mora needs to shed the NFL mentality and go for it more frequently than we've seen. If he does and is successful, it will lead to points for the Bruins. If he does and isn't successful, the Bruins will probably be able to get back on the field quicker due to the better field position the Trojans will have.
