UCLA Athletics Closes Attendance to All Events Due to COVID-19 [Updated: NCAA Follows Suit]

The measure, which closes attendance at UCLA sporting events until April 10th, may be extended “until further notice.”

@UCLA_Alumni

If you were hoping to attend Senior Day for the UCLA gymnastics team this coming Saturday, you’re going to be disappointed.

That’s because UCLA announced yesterday that all UCLA athletic events until at least April 10 will be limited to just “essential personnel.” To make matters worse, this may be extended beyond the April 10th date.

UCLA Athletics put out this statement yesterday:

UCLA Athletics continues to work closely with campus leadership to monitor and respond to the evolving coronavirus situation. Based on the decisions announced today by UCLA and out of an abundance of caution, attendance at all UCLA Athletics home events will be limited to essential personnel only at least until April 10, or until further notice. Essential personnel are defined as student-athletes, coaches, team trainers and medical personnel, game officials, operational and administrative staff, and credentialed media members. Spectators who have pre-purchased tickets for scheduled events during this time period may contact UCLA’s Central Ticket Office with inquiries.

UCLA Athletics will continue to follow University of California and UCLA travel guidelines when it comes to team and personnel travel. At this point in time, teams will continue to practice and compete; however, any student-athlete who does not feel comfortable traveling or participating in team activities will be excused from doing so.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation as well as recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and we will work together with campus officials to make any additional changes deemed in the best interest of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans.

More information on the novel coronavirus and preventative measures can be found here. Additional updates regarding UCLA Athletics events will be published here as they become available.

UPDATE (3/11/2020 1:52 pm): NCAA Tournament Games to Be Played without Fans

In response to concerns over the spread of coronavirus the NCAA announced Wednesday that only essential staff, players and coaches and limited family will be able to attend championships including the NCAA Tournament .

”I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance,” NCAA President Mark Emmert in a statement. “While I understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States.”
