It’s been a long two weeks since the Bruins played Fresno State, but it’s finally game day. And, what a time those two weeks have been! The bye week started off with the father of the Bruins’ starting quarteback blasting Chip Kelly on Twitter while backup QB Devon Modster announced that he will transfer from UCLA and center Zach Sweeney apparently suffered a shoulder injury so significant that he decided to medically retire. Then, Chip Kelly told the media that, while Wilton Speight may have been named the starting quarterback for the season opener, he wasn’t guaranteed to get that job back when he is healthy enough to play. It will be nice to play a game tonight to avoid any more distractions.

Let’s look at the Keys to the Game.

Keys to the Game

  1. Move the football. UCLA has had big difficulties moving the football so far this season. If the Bruins want to win, they need to piece together some long scoring drives and reduce the number of three-and-outs.
  2. Stop the Buffs. UCLA’s defense seemed to look best when it was attacking against Cincinnati. The Buffaloes have a potent offense. UCLA needs to get back to the attacking defense we saw against the Bearcats and avoid the bend-but-don’t-break defense we saw against Fresno State.
  3. Reduce the mistakes. This isn’t just about penalties, but getting called for fewer penalties is certainly part of this. The Bruins need to play crisper, more disciplined football. The way to do that is reducing the total number of mistakes.

Here’s how to watch, listen and stream this week’s game.
