UCLA Football's Jordan Payton & Jake Brendel Earn More Preseason Honors

Payton is named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List while Brendel has been named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

Two more watch lists were released this morning and each list contained one UCLA Bruin. The Biletnikoff Award, which recognizes the outstanding receiver in college football and is presented by the Talahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, named Bruin WR Jordan Payton to its preseason watch list. Meanwhile, the All Sports Association which presents the Wuerffel Trophy, which is known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," named UCLA C Jake Brendel to its preseason watch list.

The Biletnikoff Award recognizes the outstanding receiver, not merely wide receiver. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. The award recipient is selected by the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, a group of 221 prominent college football journalists, commentators, and former receivers.

The correlation between Biletnikoff Award winners and stardom in the National Football League is uncannily predictable. Past Biletnikoff Award winners include Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree, and Larry Fitzgerald.

Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

In weighing the three qualifying factors, the committee that votes on the nominees is instructed to give equal weight to athletic and academic achievement (25% each), and twice as much weight (50%) to community service.

Brendel was named to the Pac-12's All-Academic First Team in 2014, and yesterday he was nominated for the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which recognizes college football players "who exemplify a superior commitment to community service and volunteerism." It's clear that Brendel is well-deserving of recognition for his accomplishments both on and off the field.

Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities’ Sports Information departments and will close on October 15. Formal announcement of the winner will be on December 8 at the National Football Foundation’s press conference in New York City.

The 2015 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on December 10, 2015, on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show to be broadcast 7:00 - 9:00pm (EST) on ESPN. College Football Hall of Famer and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard will present the 2015 Biletnikoff Award winner on the show.  The presentation of the 2015 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 47th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 12, 2016 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Go Bruins!!!
