It’s Week Four and the UCLA Bruins are in Pullman, Washington tonight to play the Washington State Cougars.
Of course, the news this week that UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero will retire on June 30, 2020 has overshadowed this week’s game. That’s because the Bruin Faithful have wanted a new AD for a long time due to Guerrero’s ineptitude at getting the football and basketball programs on the right track.
Now that his retirement date has been announced, we can begin discussing UCLA’s revenue sports with hope again, even if we may have to wait until the end of 2020 for the new athletic director to set football on the right path. Of course, that requires the right individual be selected for the job. That’s a conversation we’ll be having in the coming weeks.
Today, the conversation needs to focus on a football game that seems inconsequential after another 0-3 start by Chip Kelly. With that in mind, let’s look at the keys to tonight’s game.
Keys to the Game
1. Actually rush the passer.
Just like last week, if the Bruins have any hope to win, actually having something resembling a pass rush will likely be crucial. If they can’t, then stopping the Cougars is going to fall to UCLA’s secondary which has been suspect so far this season.
2. Stop Anthony Gordon.
Unlike Jalen Hurts, Anthony Gordon isn’t going to beat you with his legs. Instead, he’s going to beat you with his arm. Having Darnay Holmes back in the secondary will help, but if that just means that Gordon torches UCLA by throwing towards some of the other Bruin defensive backs, it could be another long game. The secondary has to find a way to stop the Air Raid attack.
3. Find a way to score more than 14 points.
I’m not sure that UCLA’s offensive game plan is capable of doing this but. if the Bruins can’t score more than 14 points, it’s going to be awfully tough to beat the Cougars.
Hey, one can hope you know.
