The 1-1 Fresno State Bulldogs have a 10-game losing streak against Power Five programs, and if this first half of football is any indication of what is going to happen, they will get their first win.
1st Quarter
The first quarter was the Fresno State coming out part against the UCLA defense, and UCLA could do absolutely nothing to stop the Bulldogs, and the UCLA offense could do absolutely nothing against the Bulldogs defense.
Fresno State drove right down the field after the opening kickoff and scored on a read option as Marcus McMaryion ran for a 1 yard TD. Luckily, Asa Fuller missed the point after. The drive was a remarkable 13 play drive that took almost 5 minutes.
On their second drive the Bulldogs once again drove right down the field on the Bruins with a pass dominated drive, and they scored on a Marcus McMaryion pass to Kyle Riddering for 10 yards for a TD.
UCLA’s offense during the first quarter was non-existent and manged to gain only 38 total yards. UCLA did manage to rack up 4 penalties for 40 yards, and one turnover as Dorian Thompson Robinson fumbled the snap and it was recovered by the Bulldogs deep in UCLA’s territory as the first quarter came to an end. UCLA was down 13-0 to end the quarter.
2nd Quarter
UCLA started the second quarter holding the Bulldogs to a field goal as the Bulldogs started the quarter 16-0.
UCLA got a little momentum going, but was faced with a 3rd and 1. UCLA ran a simple run play that was stuffed. UCLA and Chip Kelly decided to roll the dice and go for it on 4th and 2, and UCLA did not pick it up and turned the ball over on downs at mid-field.
UCLA’s defense made a stand on Fresno States 3rd and 9 play as Marcus McMaryion was sacked by Keisean Lucier-South, and McMaryion then fumbled and it was recovered by UCLA’s Odua Isibo.
UCLA capitalized on the turnover. Chip Kelly was once again faced with a 4th down, and this time DTR rewarded his coach for the call as Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw to Theo Howard for 6 yards to the Bulldogs 30. DTR and Howard were not finished as DTR connected with Theo Howard on 45 yard TD pass. UCLA was down 16-7 at the 9:44 mark.
The rest of the quarter was uneventful as both teams did not manage to do much with the ball, and the half ended with the Bulldogs up 16-7.
