UCLA Bruins Trail San Diego State Aztecs at the Half, 10-7

Despite a hot start on offense, the Bruins are struggling to move the ball against the Aztecs.

Through two quarters in Pasadena, the Bruins are again struggling to move the ball.

Following a 30-yard punt return by Kyle Phillips to San Diego State’s 41-yard line, the Bruins marched down the field to score first, capping their drive off with a 5-yard touchdown run by Joshua Kelley. This, unfortunately, would be the only positive of the first half for the Bruins.

The Aztecs responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive of their own made possible by a pass interference committed by Bruins DB Elijah Gates on a broken 3rd & goal play that kept the Aztecs alive. They then punished the Bruins with a 2-yard touchdown run by Aztecs RB Chase Jasmin to tie the game.

After Bruins TE Mike Martinez fumbled on the Aztecs’ 48-yard line, the Aztecs drove 26-yards before settling for a 43-yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead before the end of the first quarter.

Scoring slowed for much of the second quarter. Following a missed 47-yard field goal by the Aztecs kicker Matt Araiza, the Bruins grounded-and-pounded the ball to the Aztecs’ 27-yard line. Unfortunately, Bruins kicker JJ Molson clunked a 45-yard field goal off the left upright to keep the Aztecs ahead with 3:47 remaining in the first half.

With 1:10 left in the quarter, the Bruins took over at the Aztecs’ 11-yard line but were again unable to muster any offense, leading to a chorus of boos in the Rose Bowl.

The score entering the third quarter, at least, is close. But it remains to be seen whether Chip Kelly and the Bruins can create any offense. With an imminent loss looming next Saturday against the Oklahoma Sooners, a loss against the Aztecs has to be avoided at any cost.

Let’s hope for some improvement.
