After easily disposing of Utah on Thursday night, the UCLA Bruins welcome the Colorado Buffaloes to Westwood tonight.
On paper, tonight’s game should be the easier of this weekend’s pair of games. After starting the season 6-0, Colorado has gone 4-7 of their past 11 games. The Buffs have started conference play off by losing their three road games and winning their two home games. That trend would seem to bear well for the Bruins tonight.
Tad Boyle has a pretty good track record as a head coach, but his Buffaloes have struggled the past few seasons.
One of the likely reasons this year’s team has struggled is because Colorado is starting three freshmen. Their leading scorer is guard McKinley Wright IV, who leads the team with an average of 15.6 ppg. The other two starting freshmen are the Colorado big men Tyler Bey and Dallas Walton. While these two guys are the Buffs’ biggest guys on the court, they seem to struggle both in points and on the boards. Bey is only fourth on the team in rebounding with 4.5 rpg and Walton is sixth with 3.4 rpg. The pair also doesn’t score much even though they are both making better than 49% of their field goal attempts.
The Buffaloes’ starting five is completed with a pair of upper class guards. Senior George King is second on the team with an average of 13.5 ppg and he leads the team in rebounding with 8.2 rpg while junior guard Namon Wright is third on the team in scoring with an average of 12.1 ppg.
Look for Dominique Collier and Deleon Brown to be two of the Buffaloes’ first two guys off the bench. Collier has been averaging 6.8 points per game while Brown has been averaging 6.0 ppg. Collier has had a much bigger impact, though, since conference play began.
