NYIT Bears at UCLA Bruins Game Thread

The Bruins host the Bears at Pauley Pavilion tonight in UCLA’s only exhibition game of the season.

Let the Steve Alford farewell tour commence!

After last night’s football game, I was going to start this game thread off with that old familiar phrase that Bruin fans know so well: Hey! It’s basketball season!

Then, I remembered that Steve Alford is still the head coach of the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team and even that enthusiasm faded quick.

On the other hand, I do like what Bruins44 wrote in the first comment of the football postgame article. He wrote that Steve Alford’s farewell tour starts tonight.

And, what a way to start.

The Bruins are hosting an exhibition against the NYIT Bears. Now, most of you know that I’m an East Coast guy. I grew up in Northern NJ. But, I must admit that before the Bears appeared on UCLA’s schedule I had never heard of the school.

That’s right. I had to Google it. So, I thought I’d share what I learned when I did.

Apparently, the New York Institute of Technology has been around since 1955. Well, at least they haven’t opened since I left Jersey to come to UCLA. I feel better now.

The school’s primary campus is located in Old Westbury, Long Island. Or, if you really want to sound like a New Yorker, be sure to make Long Island by one word and not two, as in Longisland (pronounced: long-guy-land).

At 1,050 acres, the NYIT Old Westbury campus is more than twice the size of the UCLA campus, which is just 419 acres.

The school’s most notable alums are MLB Network’s Brian Kenny, former NY Yankees pitcher Allen Watson, and former Blockbuster CEO John Antioco. Antioco rather famously declined an 2000 offer from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings to sell the streaming service to Blockbuster for $50 million by saying that Netflix was a “very small niche business,” according to Business Insider.

And, finally, the NYIT Bears play basketball in the East Coast Conference, which is an NCAA Division II conference.

This season, we are proud to, again, have today’s audio feed for everyone who opts to use the Tune In player embedded below. For optimum results, start the audio feed then pause your DVR and sync them up together.

Now, I have to admit that I’m not sure if this is going to work tonight. It should be fine during the regular season when men’s basketball games are broadcast on the radio, but I don’t know if TuneIn will have tonight’s audio because this game’s audio is online only. So, if the TuneIn plugin doesn’t have tonight’s game, then please use the link in the sidebar above.
