Tonight, the UCLA Bruins open the 2018-19 men’s basketball season with a game against the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons at 6 pm PT at Pauley Pavilion. Tonight’s game will air on Pac-12 Networks National and Los Angeles.
I find Purdue Fort Wayne’s mascot quite ironic. Here you have a basketball team which likes to play fast with a nickname that is anything, but fast. Sure, Mastodons were pretty powerful, but I wouldn’t think of them being fast.
Something else you should know about Purdue Fort Wayne is that, last season, the school was generally known as IPFW, standing for Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. It had been a “cooperatively-managed regional campus” of Indiana’s two state university systems, Indiana University and Purdue University, according to Wikipedia.
However, on July 1st, the schools parted ways with the health sciences becoming Indiana University Fort Wayne and all of the other programs, including the entire athletic department, becoming Purdue University Fort Wayne. The athletic department rebranded as well by dropping the schools previous color scheme for Purdue’s more familiar black and gold scheme. They did, however, retain blue as a secondary color.
So, while photos of the Mastodons basketball teams from years past generally show them in white and blue unis, this year’s uniforms look nothing like last year’s.
