Let’s talk about Hofstra University.
I’ve never been on the Hofstra campus despite the fact that I grew up about 40 miles from it. In fact, despite the fact that my mother’s side of the family is from New York, I’ve only been Hofstra-adjacent once that I know of and that was to see a Billy Joel concert at Nassau Coliseum during the Stormfront tour. The show was good. The night wasn’t so much as I locked my keys in the car on a cold December night.
Interestingly, despite the proximity of Hofstra to Nassau Coliseum, the Pride don’t play their home games there. Instead, they have a 5,000-seat arena of their own called the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Aside from having played each other in basketball twice, the other noted connection between UCLA and Hofstra is that acclaimed film producer Francis Ford Coppola attended both institutions.
The school’s two most notable former student-athletes would be retired Baltimore Orioles outfielder Ken Singleton and former New York Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet.
Their sports teams play in the Colonial Athletic Association and, in fact, the basketball team won the CAA regular season title last season with a 15-3 conference record. Overall, they finished 27-8, but they missed out on the CAA’s automatic NCAA bid by losing the championship game of the CAA Tournament to Northeastern, who got the conference’s NCAA bid, while the Pride ended up heading to the NIT, where they lost to North Carolina State.
