The Bruins moved to 13-1 on the season by sweeping Southern Cal in three sets on Wednesday night. Tonight, they face what is likely to be their toughest match of the season.
That’s because UCLA will travel down the 405 tonight to Long Beach where they will face the #1 ranked Long Beach State 49ers in the first game of a home-and-home series. The teams will play in Pauley on Wednesday night as well.
But, first, UCLA will have to go into a hostile building and play a team that isn’t just undefeated. Long Beach State hasn’t lost a set since January 3rd when the dropped a set to NJIT. That is the only set the 49ers have lost all season.
By comparison, the Bruins have lost 11 sets so far this season in just two more matches than Long Beach State.
Of course, that won’t mean much when the teams take the court tonight other than the fact that it demonstrates the fact that the Bruins are going to have their work cut out for them this evening.
It will likely be the opposite of Wednesday night when UCLA swept Southern Cal, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19. In the first set, the teams were tied 3-3 early when the Bruins went on a 6-1 run that put them in the lead for good as Southern Cal would never get closer than 2 points down. The second set was much more of a battle. There were a total of six ties with the last one coming at 17-17. That’s when UCLA went on an 8-1 run to close out the set. The third set was similar to the second except the last tie came at 15-15. UCLA won four of the next seven points to take a 19-18 lead before rattling off a 6-1 run to close the set and the match.
Yeah, tonight’s match definitely won’t play out like that one.
This is your UCLA Bruins at Long Beach State 49ers men’s volleyball game thread.
Go Bruins!!!
