UCLA Men’s Volleyball Opens MPSF Tourney Against Concordia

The Bruins swept the Eagles twice during the regular season.

Tonight, the UCLA men’s volleyball team begins play in the MPSF Men’s Volleyball Tournament when they host the Concordia Eagles at 7 pm PT.

Last Saturday, the Bruins wrapped up the regular season with a match against crosstown rival Southern Cal. Entering the day, UCLA needed Pepperdine to lose their match against Concordia and they needed to beat the Trojans in order to win the MPSF regular season title.

Well, neither happened. Pepperdine swept Concordia before UCLA’s match started, which made the Bruins’ match irrelevant. Then, UCLA went out and lost to Southern Cal in five sets, 25-19, 15-25, 25-14, 20-25, 11-15.

So, as a result, the Bruins do not have a first round bye and will have to play the seventh-seeded Concordia Eagles tonight at Pauley Pavilion.

During the regular season, UCLA faced Concordia twice, first on the road and two weeks ago at home, and the Bruins swept them both times.

Of the six sets the teams played this year, Concordia lost two sets by eight points, three sets by six points and one set in Irvine by two points. Given that tonight’s match is at Pauley Pavilion, the Bruins shouldn’t have all that much trouble sweeping the Eagles again.
