Last Saturday, the UCLA Men’s Water Polo team lost their first game of the season when they travelled to UC Irvine. The loss dropped the Bruins to #2 in this week’s CWPA Poll. Southern Cal, which had been number 2 is the new #1 team.
It was a hard-fought game between UCLA and the Anteaters.
UC Irvine got on the scoreboard first when Fynn Schuetze scored with 3:16 left in the first quarter. Just 23 seconds later, Luke Henriksson tied it up for the Bruins, but Schuetze put the Anteaters ahead with 33 seconds left in the quarter to give UCI a 2-1 lead to end the first quarter.
Chasen Travisano tied the game back up less than 30 seconds into the second quarter, but, just 15 seconds later, Schuetze completed his hat trick to give UC Irvine a 3-2 lead. James Vlachonassios and Jesse Camou scored the next two goals to give the Bruins their first lead of the game. But, the Anteaters just would not go away as Lovre Milos tied it back up with 20 seconds left in the half. The Bruins were able to re-take the lead going into halftime when Travisano scored his second goal of the game with just 3 ticks left on the clock.
The third quarter was all UCI. Not only did the Anteaters shut UCLA out in the quarter, but they also scored two goals to jump ahead, 6-5.
In the fourth quarter, Matt Farmer scored first for the Bruins less than a minute into the period. Max Irving and Alex Roelse also had fourth quarter goals as the teams alternated goals. Roelse’s goal tied the game at 8-8 with 3:10 left. But the Anteaters scored with just 39 seconds left to take a 9-8 and UCLA was unable to score another goal to tie the game before time expired.
This afternoon, the Bruins travel up PCH to Malibu to take on the Pepperdine Waves at Noon PT. While it won’t be televised, the game will be streamed on WatchStadium.com.
