UCLA Men’s Water Polo Opens the MPSF Tournament

Today’s game against either Austin College or Penn State Behrend shouldn’t be close, but the Bruins need to play well this weekend to secure a slot in the NCAA Tournament.

The UCLA Bruins men’s water polo team heads to Berkeley this weekend for the MPSF Men’s Water Polo Tournament. The Bruins will open the tournament this afternoon with a game against the loser of the opening game between Penn State Behrend and Austin College, which takes place at 9 am. The winner of that game will face the #4 seed UC Berkeley.

Last Time Out

The UCLA Bruins sputtered to end the regular season. After losing to Southern Cal, 10-7, two weeks ago, the Bruins went to Stanford last weekend and dropped a game to the Stanford Cardinal, 17-11. Those two games left UCLA in third place in the MSPF standings, resulting in the Bruins’ number three seeding for this weekend’s MPSF Tournament.

Tournament Outlook

Assuming the Bruins get past Austin College or Penn State Behrend today, UCLA will face Stanford again tomorrow. That will be a challenge which could make or break the team’s season. Two of the Bruins’ three losses this season have come against the Cardinal. If UCLA loses to them again, they may not make the NCAA Tournament simply because only seven teams do and there may not be an available at-large bid for the Bruins if they can’t make it to this weekend’s championship game.
