UCLA Softball
The UCLA Softball team cruised past Cal State Fullerton in yesterday’s Los Angeles Regional Final, 9-1. Madeline Jelenicki, Paige Halstead and Brianna Tautalafua each homered. For Jelenicki and Tautalafua, they each completed the LA Regionals with 3 homers in 3 games. Rachel Garcia pitched a complete game for the Bruins, allowing just one run on six hits. She struck out nine.
Here are the game highlights, courtesy of UCLA Athletics’ YouTube channel.
The Bruins will host the Los Angeles Super Regional next weekend against Ole Miss. The teams will play a Best-of-3 series starting on Thursday. The winner will advance to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
UCLA Baseball
The Bruins used a five-run fifth inning to complete the weekend sweep of Utah yesterday as UCLA won 8-3. Michael Toglia’s two-run home run proved to be the game winner. Chase Strumpf also homered in the fifth to make it the Bruins’ first back-to-back homers since 2010. Daniel Rosica also homered in the sixth to give UCLA an insurance run.
Jon Olsen (6-1) allowed just one run in 5-2/3 innings to pick up the win and move to 5-0 in conference play.
UCLA Men’s Tennis
The combination of the Georgia Bulldogs and bad weather proved to be too much for the UCLA Men’s Tennis team. UCLA started off by winning the doubles point, but pay was halted for almost five hours in the middle of singles play and only Martin Redlicki was able to win his singles match. The loss ends the team portion of the season for UCLA and ends the Men’s Tennis team’s attempt to win UCLA’s 114th NCAA title.
UCLA Women’s Volleyball & UCLA Beach Volleyball
UCLA Women’s Volleyball Coach Michael Sealy and UCLA Beach Volleyball Coach Stein Metzger jointly announced that Sarah Sponcil is transferring to UCLA from LMU for the 2017 season. Sponcil will have one year of eligibility left as an outside hitter for the indoor team and two years of eligibility remaining for the UCLA Beach Volleyball team. Sponcil played three indoor seasons at LMU and was named an Honorable Mention All-American the past two seasons for the LMU indoor team. She played just two seasons of beach volleyball at LMU and was named an AVCA Collegiate Beach All-American twice.
Speaking of AVCA Collegiate Beach All-Americans, Megan and Nicole McNamara were just awarded with the honor for their play this season.
UCLA Football
ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura asks three off-season questions about the Bruin football team that pretty much everyone is asking. Bonagura wonders whether the Bruins can develop a running game with basically the same group of players. He speculates about what impact Jaelan Phillips will have as a true freshman. And, finally, he also questions what should be expected of Josh Rosen.
The first and the third questions are definitely at the forefront of the minds of Bruin fans.
And, that’s What’s Bruin this Monday morning.
Go Bruins!
