The UCLA Softball team got off to a good start yesterday by sweeping their twilight doubleheader. In game 1, the Bruins defeated Maryland, 5-1 while UCLA defeated Middle Tennessee State, 11-0, in game 2.
Against the Terrapins, UCLA got on the scoreboard right away. Briana Perez scored singled to start the bottom of the first and then stole second. Bubba Nickles moved Perez to third when Nickles reached base on a throwing error and Aaliyah Jordan’s fielder’s choice drove Perez in.
In the second inning, Perez scored again, but, this time, it was because she hit a 3-run homer to right-center that scored Paige Halstead and Rachel Garcia. That homer would be the game winner for the Bruins. UCLA added an insurance run in the third to make it 5-0.
The Terrapins would only muster one run off start Johanna Grauer who pitched six innings before Garcia relieved her in the seventh. Grauer allowed 5 hits and 5 walks while striking out 4 to earn the win.
In the nightcap, UCLA scored every time they batted. Briana Perez bunt-singled to start the game off and her sister Kylee moved her over to second on a fielder’s choice. Aaliyah Jordan doubled her in while Bubba Nickles tripled to score Jordan, which got Nicles the game-winning RBI.
The Bruins added two more in the second and again the Perez sisters were right in the middle of it. Brianna singled up the middle to score Julie Rodriguez and Kylee’s sacrifice fly scored Kinsley Washington.
In the third, Washington had a two-run double. Briana Perez tripled home two more run to make it 8-0, UCLA, while Kylee singled her sister home. After Imani Johnson pinch-ran for Perez, Jordan singled to score Johnson and the Bruins led 10-0 after three innings.
Nickles hit her first homer of the season in the fourth and Holly Azevedo completed her five-inning mercy rule shut-out with a scoreless fifth. Azevedo only allowed 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 for her first win of the season.
This is your Cal Poly at UCLA softball open thread.
