UCLA Softball Crushes Cal Poly, 13-0; Plays Another DH Today

The Bruins scored all the runs they needed in the first inning.

Freshman Briana Perez has been a spark plug in the Bruins’ first three games of the season.

After sweeping a doubleheader to start the season on Friday, UCLA played Cal Poly San Luis Obispo yesterday in the Bruins’ third game of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament.

UCLA picked right up where they left off on Friday when they defeated Middle Tennessee State, 11-0, in a five inning, mercy rule win.

The Bruins scored 8 runs in the bottom of the first. Briana Perez doubled to start the inning for UCLA. She advanced to third on a single by Aaliyah Jordan. After Bubba Nickles was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Brianna Tautalafua walked to advance the runners and score Perez. A walk to Paige Halstead advanced the runners again, scoring Jordan. Rachel Garcia drove in Nickles with a single to center to make it 3-0 and Zoe Shaw drove in Tautalafua with a single to right.

In her second at-bat of the inning, Briana Perez hit a bases clearing double down the right field line while Jordan’s second single of the inning brought her home to make it 8-0, Bruins.

UCLA’s only run of the second was driven in by Garcia’s double to left center that scored Imani Johnson who pinch-ran for Tautalafua after she singled to start the inning.

Briana Perez started another Bruin rally in the third with a single up the middle. She later scored on a single by Nickles. Halstead drove in two more runs with a single up the middle and Malia Quarles drove in one more to give UCLA a 13-0 win.

Today, the Bruins play another doubleheader with Cal Poly again in the first game and UC Riverside in the second. Live audio will be available for both games in addition to live stats.
