All season long, the Bruin bats have been hot, but they were silenced last night as UCLA was shut out 3-0 by Arizona State.
It was just the second time all season and the first time at home that UCLA has been held scoreless. The other game was UCLA’s third game against Oregon.
UCLA’s best offensive threat came in the first inning when Kylee Perez was hit by a pitch and Rachel Garcia walked with two outs. Unfortunately, Bubba Nickles struck out looking to end the inning.
After that, all UCLA could do was a single from Madeline Jelenicki in the fifth, one from Briana Perez in the sixth and one from Nickles in the seventh.
Garcia pitched a reasonably good game, even though, her streak of innings without an earned run came to an end at 45 innings when she gave up a three-run homer to Marisa Stankiewicz in the fourth. As a side note, Stankiewicz is the daughter of former major leaguer Andy Stankiewicz, who played for the Yankees, Astros, Expos and Diamondbacks and is currently the head baseball coach for Grand Canyon University.
As it turned out, that was the ballgame right there. Rachel Garcia took just her second loss of the season and is now 19-2 on the season.
Tonight, the teams meet again at 7 pm PT in the penultimate game of the regular season. Like last night, tonight’s game will air on the Pac-12 Networks, but it is only on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Arizona tonight.
This is your UCLA Bruins at Arizona State Sun Devils softball game 2 open thread.
Go Bruins!!!
