UCLA Softball Plays Two Today After Being Rained Out Yesterday

The Bruins’ scheduled home opener was cancelled last night by weather and field conditions, but things look good for today’s twinbill.

Unfortunately, last night’s doubleheader against Cal Poly and Boise State was washed out and won’t be made up. The good news is that the Bruins got an extra day of rest and should be ready to go this afternoon when they are scheduled to play two more. Today’s opponents are the Ole Miss Rebels and the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Last Time Out

Well, with the rainouts last night, the Bruins’ last time out is still last Sunday. Check out yesterday’s article which recapped Sunday’s games to find out how UCLA did the last time they played.

Ole Miss Rebels

UCLA’s first opponent this afternoon is the Ole Miss Rebels. Unlike the Bruins, the Rebels were able to play both of their games yesterday. Against UC Riverside, the Rebels won the game in a mercy-rule shortened five innings by a score of 11-3. Then, in game two, Ole Miss topped Cal Poly, 5-2. The pair of wins moves the Rebels to 5-1 on the season. Last weekend, they won three of four at the Friends of Jaclyn Tournament in Orlando, Florida including a win over then-#21 Minnesota.

Fresno State Bulldogs

In today’s nightcap, the Bruins will face Fresno State again. Last weekend, the teams met on Thursday at the Hawai’i Paradise Classic. The Bruins won that game, 8-2. Following that game, the Bulldogs won games against Texas-Arlington, St. Mary’s and Georgia State before losing to host Hawai’i. Yesterday, the Bulldogs split a pair of games against Oregon State and Stacy Winberg Tournament co-host Long Beach State. The Bulldogs lost to the Beavers and beat the 49ers. This morning, they defeated Cal Poly 8-0 in five innings.

Outlook

Today’s games look to be tougher than yesterday’s games would have been, but I still expect a pair of Bruin victories and I won’t be surprised to see UCLA shorten the nightcap against Fresno State by invoking the mercy rule.
